I like how the copy could be interpreted as both ‘you can’t have one because we’re not letting many people have them right now’ and also ‘we might be limiting the number of people who can open a joint account, we might not. We’re not telling you’.
Ah I’m not that fussed, I think someone did a manual review further back and was still declined. We’ll open one soon with Nationwide since we both have an account there.
Nationwide is great. Having individual & joint accounts works really well there. And they are decent enough all around. Especially if one has flexplus account + members credit card. It covers all travel perks all around (no ATM fees, no FX fees, travel insurance for the household). Etc.
Im a monzo premium user, and remembered I could check my credit score in the app. I use CheckMyFile and Experian monthly already due to working in financial services. However, figured Id see if the Monzo score was perhaps causing an issue.
The monzo scoring was a bit low, contacted support - they advised it was a Transunion score. So, although they report their accounts and loans to all three, and when you request a loan, the credit check Experian… for their “credit score” internally its exclusively on Transunion.
My Transunion shows a couple of accounts that my Experian/Equifax dont. It doesnt say anywhere that ive seen that credit scoring is an indicator for the joint accounts - but its perhaps a metric being utilised somewhere. My scoring is otherwise high, but I have set about closing a couple of points to see whether marginally boosting the TU score will make a difference.
Anyone else being declined with a less than 710 TU score in Monzo?!
You’d probably appreciate then that a) these numbers mean nothing and b) Monzo would have to inform you if they were going to be checking your credit file before you tried to open a JA.
They wouldnt need to perform a credit check if the information is already authorised to be displayed within the account? Premium Accounts come with a feature which displays your Transunion score. Updated once a month. I was just thinking out loud that perhaps it was feeding into some of the alogrithms they’re using that determines whether you qualify.
Doesnt opening a JA trigger a soft credit check anyway?
There are very strict laws around the use of this data. Authorising its use for the credit tracker feature doesn’t automatically grant use for lending and eligibility checking purposes. There’s more detail on this if you check the privacy notice within the Settings, documents and T&C’s section of the premium/plus tab in the app.
Monzo would be exposing themselves to hefty fines both from the FCA and due to GDPR if they did so without our explicit permission.
I can’t answer this, but what I do know is that people are being declined a JA before there’s any credit file check.
I am in this boat - I cant even get throught the JA page. Just an instance “sorry we cant offer you an account blah”.
Which is irritating given my own perceived presentation to Monzo. High income, clear credit, been with monzo since 2017, they have my business account which has significant cashflow, theyve offered me a loan… why am I unable to open a JA. Baffles me.
I continue to use my Starling JA, but check monthly in the hopes that something has changed.
