Updated transaction screen, makes me think merchant logos/maps are on the way

Really been impressed by NatWest of late, I went away from Monzo to them last year (I’ve had a NatWest account for years) and its still my main account (Monzo for spendz)

Love the quiet design improvements, and the fact that the remember they are a bank foremost and don’t fill the Home Screen with crap, just what your balance is.

I’m glad NatWest are improving. My husband banks with them and they manage to annoy me by proxy when he can’t see an upcoming direct debit or needed to go to a branch to get proper bank statements (for mortgage paperwork)

Yes this is irritating - they do notify but only on the day and you don’t even see the direct debit has been setup in advance like Monzo do. Hmm, the statements I didn’t have this problem ( I recently got a mortgage for a move) as our lender accepted the ones the app generates.

Transaction Maps, transactions appearing on the date they were taken and pots, these three things would make me consolidate to just Natwest

Yeah we moved mortgage provider and we weren’t sure the exact date the first payment would go out. I drove him up the wall “can you see it predicted yet? How about now?”

The in app statements look different for some reason and some lenders get sniffy about it. Thankfully our new lender was cool about it. (how hard would it be to unify them tho? My HSBC app ones look the same as printed ones)

Also forgot how useful the spending insights tab is, looks super nice, be cool if trends could start to do similar

What are your thoughts on NatWest including a carbon footprint calculator in their app? Carbon footprint calculator | NatWest (I know this isn’t a new feature, but just wanted to see what people thought of it).

Be curious to know if it changed peoples behaviours in any way.

“You’re this bad for the planet, stop living your life right now”.

I do think people in general already know how bad/good their behaviours are. Maybe a few people won’t realise how much small things can add up though? Maybe it will help in that regard.

Personally for me it’s in the way - I do want to help change the environment but telling me I’ve used xx amount of carbon to drive to the nearest shop (when I live in the sticks and have literally no other option) is a bit pointless.

I do look at it from time to time but my (personal) take is that individual action won’t really amount to much, I’d be more interested in news on their carbon reduction and ethical investment initiatives.

I also question it’s numbers. For example how can one direct debit “generate” 60kg of Co2 but another doesn’t. What am I supposed to do, just stop paying for my car :joy:

That said, the app is coming along nicely and I actually quite like Natwest, so I won’t be too bothered if it sticks around.

Would be keen to understand other viewpoints for sure

Is one of them using Bitcoin?

Well so far it’s going ok using NatWest as my day to day account again. I seem to have lost all instant notifications tho, which is strange as they were working really well at one point. Also, despite the email I got saying I could use the new card in Apple Pay straight away it wouldn’t let me add it until the card arrived in the post.

I haven’t got rid of Monzo, but things like this make you realise how good it is for simple things like this

I get instant notifications for anything i spend using my card. One day they might finally get some done for all DDs, and not just the 1st time for a new one.

Would be nice to see newly set up DDs which haven’t collected yet, just so you know it’s on and waiting for the next billing cycle.

I did too but inexplicably they’ve stopped for me, not sure why - they are turned on and also on within apple, I think it might be the Dev version of iOS perhaps, it only started to happen when I updated the app.

Strange thing is I get the other notifications just fine, eg DD, card setup for Apple Pay but NOT the card notifications or money transfer ones

Inexplicably they just started working again today, I wonder if their systems need you to start actively using the account again before they “re enable”?

Strange

Now if NatWest were to put in transaction maps and have items post on the day they occurred not when they cleared I think it would be game over Monzo

The redesign of the transaction details screen has a lot of empty space which could indicate that this is coming.

They haven’t quite done this (it would probably require a major change to the way their system uses CA7 batch processing to update account ledgers overnight) but the most recent redesign has tweaked the transaction list to hide the difference between fully cleared/posted and pending transactions better. The only obvious clue now that things haven’t fully cleared is that the running balance doesn’t show on anything still pending.

Yes, this was my theory too,. That, or Icon’s.

Interesting insight, I don’t know enough about how banks work but I presumed that it would be down to their systems. I think they’ve done really well with their latest design, it works for me

It does seem that NatWest probably has the best app out of the high-street banks. They seem to have many features that almost no other banks have and they seem to work very well. Just a shame about their card design haha

FWIW I really like the new design, it has a cool retro 80’s vibe to it.

And I agree, I’ve been with Natwest ages (long enough to have had a chequebook with them!) and I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how modern the app has become over the last year or so. I’m actually using them day to day again now - the continual push for upgrades to access basic features and gimmicks like sharing with a friend to get a fiver have pushed me away from Monzo again for now.

I agree, NatWest’s app is actually quite nice and seems to get updated regularly with new features.

Their new card can do one though :joy:

I’m still confused why they decided to make that their card. For something like a bank, I’d have thought you would want everything to be fairly standard to appeal to as many people as possible, as well as trying to keep that professional look.

Their new card will never appear to as many people as possible and to many, looks childish. I don’t see why NatWest would want that.
