Nationwide Chat

Really enjoying Nationwide so far. I’ve gone all in. The customer service keeps impressing. It far, far exceeds the service levels I was used to with HSBC Premier, even.

The app just needs a couple of things e.g. notifications and it will be the perfect offering.

I do really like Nationwide and use it a lot but I can’t currently go truly all in as the don’t have investment isa, sipp etc and I still need to keep somewhere that offers cheque imaging & post office cash pay in too. I think that’s fine anyway as I like to have stuff spread over at least 2 banks

I’m quite happy keeping my investments separate to banking. In my case, AJ Bell.

“All in” for me refers to all banking. I’m yet to see a bank be able to stack up well against a specialist investment provider anyway, so it’s best kept separate in my view.

Not allowing Post Office deposits is disappointing, I’d agree.

Ye definitely good argument to keep it separate and in reality one provider is very unlikely to offer the best option for you in lots of categories so you either need to be happy picking the best in each category and accepting it will be with multiple providers or accepting you’re not getting the best product for the benefit of having it all under one roof

Good to hear. I think if they offered savings accounts and notifications I’d consider them again in the future, I used to bank with them and found them pretty decent if not slightly legacy.

I opened a HSBC Premier account on Sunday, and basically applied to switch it out on Monday. Didn’t get on with the app, found it weird I needed to visit a branch to open another account. I claim the prize for the shortest account life.

Why switch it rather than just closing it?

To close you have to visit a branch… I was like is this the 70’s or something. Also might be a bit difficult in the branch when they ask you to insert your card and pin and your like, the account is 24 hours old and I haven’t had the card yet… LOL

To be fair the switch failed as I didn’t provide the last 5 digits from the debit card so HSBC refused the switch

There’s a button in the app which says close account…

Which when I clicked it said… "Sorry, we’re unable to close your account through online or mobile banking’

Ah helpful HSBC as usual then

I find that when one gets too invested in a brand you’ll end up choosing compromised products/services for the sake of having it all in one place. It’s almost good nationwide don’t offer investments (although it would be cool if they did!) because it actually allows you to pick the best product in the market rather than the only one on offer by the bank. I’ve also been guilty of opening every saving account/investment account with one bank with the hopes of one day building enough in there to get “premier”. I’ve now realised that the offerings are so bland and uninteresting that I’d rather bank somewhere which has a care in the world about what they’re doing and good customer service.

What I like about the Nationwide app compared to say RBS, Lloyds, HSBC and ahem Monzo is they are not constantly pushing stuff in your face, If I want to apply for an overdraft or cashback or even invest in an ISA, I will decide and then find it in your app. Rather than being constantly prodded every time I open the app.

I’ve been full Nationwide for years. FlexPlus for salary and bills, spend all on the CC and pay off each month. Cash ISA there too as emergency fund but investments elsewhere. Monzo is the joint account to keep it separate and useful for any visa/bank issues.

Can’t see it changing. Comes down to ethics, service and trust.

I’ve noticed they’ve started putting offers there in their app/when you log-in to online banking like are you looking for… but usually it’s something helpful like a savings account or mortgage

They keep offering me the credit card that I already have with them :upside_down_face:

Actually now you’ve said that, same here… maybe they want you to have two or more, one for everyday, fancy, guest, one for fancy guest

The Virgin one is better as it does 0.25% cashback. You can still do balance transfers between Nationwide and Virgin.

I have the Virgin card but don’t get any cashback to be fair I’ve had it years
