Hi
App rejects my passport and now I don’t know what to do, can I use an officially translate one?
I think you will need the original passport. Ask support to look at why it has been rejected. Or get a provisional driving license which will work as ID too
Hi! Is this a UK passport or one from another country? If the latter, you may need to provide an alternative proof such as residence permit to prove right to an account. Though I’m just guessing based on what other banks would want.
@alandoe @cookywook as an aside - there’s a formatting issue on here: Monzo Help - How to open a Monzo Personal Account
With Step 4 not being bold.
Got this sorted @michaelw90
Curtesy question, when you say original passport what do you do when the original passport is expired and it’s been renewed?
I meant you will need your current, valid passport and a scan or translated copy is unlikely to be acceptable.
If you’re not British/Irish you will likely need an indefinite leave residence permit as well as the passport.
No, you won’t. You only need to be a resident in the UK (basically to have a UK address) to have an account, you don’t have to have indefinite leave to remain. Monzo check this by sending a card to your address. Definitely no need for ILR
That’s what they use to confirm your address.
However, if you aren’t British/Irish they ask for a suitable visa or residence permit. If memory serves, it has to allow to to live in the UK for at least two years. OH is Australian so we hit this quite regularly.
She has ILR but the actual permit expires at the end of next year i.e. less than two years.
Just to clarify, you have to be a LEGAL UK resident, hence the need for a visa or residence permit.
Fair point
My wife is not British or Irish and has never been asked for this.
She’s been lucky. Most banks in our experience ask for her residence permit.
I use my original passport, on the other hand in the verification steps they ask for some specific documents like a driving license or British id card which I have just my passport.
The support team couldn’t tell me anything about the problem, I have used my passport in many cases in the UK and this is the first time that someone tells me they can’t accept this passport.
As I said at the beginning of this thread, unless it’s a UK passport they will likely want to see evidence that you’re a legal UK resident. Such as a Biometric Residence Permit or similar.
Which country is it?
As I say I’ve found with an Australian passport, if memory serves, Monzo wanted a visa or residence card showing the right to live in the UK for at least two years. Other banks were happy enough with the residence card.
I bet this depends on which passport it is. I guess EU/EEA passport holders won’t be asked for this, since the vast majority of them in the UK do have ILR but won’t have a BRP.
Outside of that, it’s likely you’ll be asked.
In theory they could ask for your share code for EU/EEA/Anywhere, but only the Open University have done that, no banks thus far.
You seem a bit confused. You don’t need indefinite leave to remain in order to be a legal resident, actually you normally need to be a legal resident for several years before you can get indefinite leave to remain.
