The best things about Monzo have always been the new features that I could never get from my legacy bank, things like instant notifications, savings pots (love the Investec and Oak North offerings recently and will be locking some fixed savings away soon) as well as a slick UI and great community. Legacy banks are scrambling to do what Monzo are already doing and have been for a long time, we’re all sick of those banks that make things difficult for us and rip us off with fees and charges, while all the while getting richer and richer themselves.
The disappointing bit about this announcement is that Monzo seem to be following them same shit banks we all hate with this feature. They all offer that and now you will too, this isn’t what we’ve come to expect from you.
In my opinion, there is one huge reason I wouldn’t pay the premium for this particular offering and that is if I want phone insurance or travel insurance or breakdown cover I can go to a comparison site in a few minutes and get a detailed breakdown of hundreds of products. Not only that but I can also use cash back sites like Quidco… I have earned hundreds of pounds purchasing things I was already going to buy. If I was to switch to Monzo doing all this for me then I wouldn’t be able to shop around for the best deal and I wouldn’t make money on my purchases.
Apple had the right idea recently by offering cash back on all purchases, that is something I would 100% pay a subscription for. I know they are offering a credit card and will make a tonne of money from that, but could a subscription open up this option for us? Santander do it for direct debits and selected retailers. So does Curve.
Also what about better interest rates on savings, I don’t want an overdraft but I’d happily pay a subscription to get better rates on my savings.
Savings on Apple Music, Netflix, prime, gym memberships etc would be good! Lump them all together into one payment at a reduced rate and I’ll sign up for that… let us pick which ones we want for an agreed monthly fee.
Disposable cards would be great for those dodgy websites we don’t trust. And for a main card, why not metal? …something more premium feeling than a blue card.
What they really were getting at is the rather open-endedness of what is on the table, they’re offering these services for £3/month now, but they will be adding to this and Monzo hope after the 12 months of discounts are over that there is a product that people value more highly (with more benefits).
Not denying that it looks bad now but I’m sure as hell that it can only get better from here.
IMHO I don’t think £3/month rising to £6/month for a different coloured card, a custom Monzo.me link, the opportunity to attend certain Monzo events, some merch and the option in the future of adding additional benefits at additional cost is good value.
I mean, It’s early days - and that’s reflected in the price, you all know Monzo listens to it’s community and adapts / enhances to give you a great experience… so I’m happy with it so far, so long as the increase from £3 - £6 is significant in terms of additions. Great work guys
Just to add my two cents… I travel a lot with work, so lounge access would sell it for me
Interested to see how much passion this has raised.
I simply read this whole thing as Monzo saying "We’re rolling out Monzo+… None of the meaningful features are in place yet, so we’re doing a cheapo discount version for the early adopters and enthusiasts who’re excited about the idea of a fancy new card etc. and just like being involved with things from the outset.
"Those guys will be on the ground floor when the real features roll out and can help us get them right for the people who are more circumspect about what they sign up for.
“Once we’ve got done all that and are ready to roll out some real features and it’s ready for those who want more than some gimmicks, we’ll move the price up to its full amount and welcome them on board.”
It honestly doesn’t seem that unreasonable to me and I say that as someone who isn’t keen on the idea of a premium account anyway.
It will be interesting to see what the core features you get for £6 when the product is fully fleshed out. I disagree with approach to release it for £3 now and offer essentially nothing (even if £3 is a discounted rate). I think it just doesn’t give off the right vibe that a ‘new different bank’ is charging £3 for a coloured card (just my opinion).
For me I think the core features will need to be significant for me to sign up otherwise it’ll seem like an expensive subscription to then be given the ability to pay for additional (perhaps more beneficial to me personally) services.
The more I look at this the more I cant understand what is great about the " offer " for £3 / £6 per month I get a different coloured card - Monzo brand is the coral card ? , a personalised monzo.me link which was on offer for nothing previously and Ive never used anyway , and exclusive events in London , for me some 80 odd miles away .
a lot of shrugging emojis - is that it -
I want Monzo to be my financial hub, kind of what has been eluded to since the beginning , I want them to provide me with Travel Insurance , Phone Insurance , house insurance , Mortgages , switching energy providers etc etc reward points from signed up merchants , all in a pick and mix way rather than a bundled package which I wouldn’t
use half of - all of which I expect monzo to take their cut out of for the service.
In this what I can only describe as half baked offering that - to fanfare we are rolling out - all it seems to be saying is pay us a monthly sub and we might offer you at sometime in the future at an undefined cost . your own personal financial hub , maybe at sometime . If you don’t join our Monzo + exclusive monthly fee club - maybe we won’t offer you anything - more shrugging men
