On next weeks episode of The Apprenticeā¦
Same here, especially if itās metal.
I like the sound of this but Iām not hopeful.
Like any company, Monzo needs to create value to make money. Itās never as simple as āpay Ā£10 for monzo plus, get Ā£20 off your billsā ![]()
- Mobile phone insurance - as others have said seems obvious for an app based bank
- Discounts for cinemas and food outlets
Beyond that, Iām wondering if there is a view of data you have based on frequency of transaction that would let you leverage how often Monzo users use a certain [business] to get a discount?
e.g. āHey Costa, our customers are spending Ā£xxxxx on your coffee each month, can we chat about a discount scheme to incentivise them to spend more?ā
Cards - Nice to see the fascination with new cards still exists (I jest!). Very glad this will be a Plus option as itās pure vanity/marketing so let those who want one pay for it, but make sure those who donāt want one arenāt paying for it as part of their subscription. If anything this would make me NOT bother with Plus, I donāt wanna be paying to support other peoples desires to be ācoolā.
Something like this

I think the only way Iād be interested in this is if itās offering things that other banks arenāt.
If there is significant overlap between this and my Nationwide account for example, I probably wonāt bother, but perhaps there is a market for selling something that people can use alongside the subscriptions they get from other banks and be entirely unique.
I personally donāt think Monzo can match the value (for the same services) you can get from other banks at this moment in time, so why not throw something entirely different in to the market?
Hi @tomdavies , thank you for the update. Good to hear what you and the team have been up to.
Have you considered the possibility of allowing the page to be viewed in landscape, so more is visible across the width?
Regarding billing, I feel monthly would work best for most people - though as previously commented, possibly with a discounted option for those who pay annually.
As far as the card design is concerned, I remain baffled by the concept of providing alternatives to hot coral cards. Monzo is famous for its hot coral cards, among other things. Most articles in the media about Monzo highlight this fact - several of them stating āyou may have seen the hot coral cardsā. Iām all for new designs, but as far as Iām concerned, they should wherever possible still maintain the colour that has so contributed to Monzo becoming such a recognisable brand, and gives customers a sense of kinship when they see other cards while out and about.
When I had an American Express card I got early booking with The National Theatre, thatās the one feature that I really miss with it. https://www.nationaltheatre.org.uk/amex
Nothing that is London or mainland UK specific
I was on the trial for points but there were no retailers near me
Are you working on anything that provides cashback on household bills?
Would my āPlusā card still say āInvestorā? It may seem small, but I really like my Investor card. Iām also not sure why there needs to be a different card design, seems a bit redundant. The existing cards look great, everyone recognises it. just slap the word Plus on it. Could make a metal version - Iād take it for nothing, but certainly wouldnāt pay a premium for a metal product that serves exactly the same purpose and function with no improvement over a plastic card.
Whatever you offer, Iād expect it to be priced the same as other banks, if not less. Your last attempt at Lounge passes was more expensive than HSBC, I think it was by Ā£10/visit.
Give me coffee. I seriously miss my weekly freebie at Cafe Nero from O2 Priority, and just as I switched to Three they stopped offering the freebie with Costa (now Vodafone have it). Be the first bank to do this?
I really donāt understand the Mobile Phone insurance. Seems like a bit of a gimmick - many banks offer it, but I bet itās already included in the Contents insurance the majority of their customers have. I donāt want to be paying for products and services I already have.
Breakdown Cover is already very cheap with AutoAid.
Withdrawal limits are meaningless. I can just transfer money to Starling or another bank to increase my UK limit for the day, and the same when Iām abroad (there are plenty of fee-free cards).
Sure Iād like Netflix and Spotify discounts, but then Iād be annoyed if you offered Apple Music and NowTV instead, so you canāt really win with this.
Food and Cinema type offers are an empty gesture. Iāve not used the Meerkat Movies (and food) discounts Iāve had for years, and before that I never used Tastecard. Thereās always the same or better offer on VoucherCloud or similar.
Maybe some actual financial products? Cashback, interest, a savings account with preferential rate? A discount on fees when renewing a mortgage (big banks offer this on their own, you could partner with the financial services without a big high street presence?)
Some of the travel-related perks Iāve seen look good, but only if you travel frequently. Can you price it so that itās still worth me having if I go on one holiday abroad per year?
If I seem a little cynical, itās because I am. I view most āpremiumā accounts as pointless for the reasons above, and Iām really hoping Monzo can offer more value and substance than the typical premium schemes Iāve seen.
I hear that a lot from people and I get it.
But letās not let the perfect be the enemy of the good. If there is an option to add something thatās popular but, say, Manchester specific - and doesnāt add wildly to cost, or doesnāt force something with broader reach out of the package - then letās go for it. We canāt all benefit from everything all the time.
I donāt want to pay monthly for something I can get on my cereal. This was the problem with some of the old Monzo Plus benefits, you could get the same discounts by searching for voucher codes online.
Exclusive offers would be fab though!
I fear I might be in devilās advocate mode tonight!
Iād be interested in hearing from anyone who understands the financials behind these things, but I thought a lot of these offers are pretty standard, marketing budget things.
While I agree that Monzo should stay away from me customer only offers, or ones that have complicated terms and conditions, if there is little or no cost to Monzo for including these things Iād say just do it. Having all this stuff together in one place (Monzo) is a good thing, I think. (I can never find the right cereal packet when I want it!)
Ninja edit to say that these things absolutely have to be in top of a decent core value proposition. And part of me still thinks that offering it to all 3m+ customers would probably be better in the long term, but if weāre being dragged down the paid account routeā¦
No I get what youāre saying, the more offers the better. Especially when these sorts of deals will cost Monzo very little to include as part of the package.
I think itās very easy to forget that for Ā£15/Ā£20 per month thereās only so much they can include to make a profit. Insurance is a good offering for packaged bank accounts (hence why they all include them) because they know that not every customer will need/ claim on all the policies.
My thoughts were more along the lines of something like that, not a carbon copy, or for it to be the sole benefit. I would like something the same as longs as it came with other perks too.
Although I wasnāt suggesting they simply copy a cereal companyās offering, another thing to bear in mind is that depending on the cost of Plus, it might not be that far off what people might spend in a month on cereal. So just because you wouldnāt pay for it, other people might.
I would also like to see Interest on balances just like now.
Happy (wet) Saturday

Yes - please offer both. This way you can ensure
stays accessible to all, and perhaps offer a reduced annual fee over the monthly option? This is mostly in line with majority of subscription services. My thoughts as a customer - I would be less inclined to sign up for a premium service if Pay Monthly wasnāt an option. Anyone else? ![]()
This is your opportunity to BRING
POINTS BACK! I - along with MANY of your customers - was gutted when you abruptly ended the testing phase of this. POINTS was one of the features that persuaded me to go #FullMonzo, and I would be more tempted to opt for a Plus feature in the future if something like this was offered.
Other premium banking features should include:
- Fee-free overdraft
- Higher withdrawal rate abroad
- Cashback on direct debits
- Remove the £1 charge when paying in cash via a PayPoint
So we are still trying to hash out Monzo Plus. This time hopefully there will be direction, logic and easy to understand.
In regards to cards, lots of fluff around Metal cards personally there expensive and a false status symbol. Iād rather have a rare card then a fancy metal one but just me. Given the young card tend to use mobile payments I wonder if this is just jump on the metal bandwagon because everyone else is. Monzo and itās hot coral cards have been part of their iconic image despite relating little to the brand logo or colours, i hope it stays but perhaps a more grown up and professional alternative in addition is worth looking at.
I agree Hot Coral needs to stay. It can be combined with other colours. Maybe black would look premium but have some hot coral on the card
