Monzo now on Garmin Pay! ⌚️🎉

Hey everyone

I’m Nadzia - a new Product Marketing Manager here at Monzo

I’ve got some super exciting news for those of you who are Garmin watch owners (I know the eagle-eyed among you have already spotted this). Back in 2018, someone asked the all important question: “When will I be able to buy oat milk with my watch :milk_glass:”, well the answer is here… now!

We’ve launched Garmin pay: You can now add your Monzo cards to compatible Garmin watches through the Garmin Connect app. Which means making those quick payments on the go (even if it’s a pastry after your run :croissant:) is a lot easier.

How do I set up Garmin Pay?

  1. Open your Garmin Connect app (or download it if you don’t have it already)
  2. Connect your Garmin watch via bluetooth - sync if required.
  3. Select Garmin Pay and follow the instructions. You may be prompted to set a 4-digit passcode if you’re setting up for the first time
  4. Add your Monzo card by entering details manually. After you add your Monzo card, open your Monzo app to complete the setup.

How do I pay with Garmin?

  1. Access the wallet on the watch with a swipe or press of a button
  2. Enter your Garmin Pay passcode. The passcode will be required every 24 hours or if the watch has been removed
  3. The last card used will be your default card. Scroll up or down to select your other cards
  4. Your card is available for 60 seconds in order for you to make payment. After that, the wallet will close and return to watch face.

As always, we’d love to hear your feedback!
We’re excited that this is now enabled for you all, but do let us know if you’ve got any questions.

Enjoy!

Nadzia

I don’t want to be a negative Nelly on a positive post, but when you have limited resources, I don’t really understand how this ever gets to the top of the list when there are so many things that many people are screaming out for, not just the handful of people that own a Garmin.

Glad to hear this is now supported!

I actually switched from Garmin to Fitbit a year or two ago, in part because of Google Wallet support on Fitbit. But good to know there is now support for Garmin Pay should I ever decide to switch back to Garmin.

<8% market share and isn’t even available on all Garmin watches.

That’s probably less than a handful!

Don’t get me wrong, it’s great for the people that have a Garmin and can now use it, I just don’t understand the prioritisation.

Does this mean that I was wrong?

I added it, smooth experience besides the UK being called Great Britain in the list. I had curve added but I have never used my watch to pay, I guess it’s for emergencies anyway.

Card colour is shown correctly in the app and on the watch.

It was, which is probably what happened. In the same way that Lewis (deliberately not tagging the poor chap) is trying to get the Chase integration over the line.

Not everything is equal of course and maybe someone bought a new watch and worked a few lunch hours but from a this vs that perspective, I agree that it’s where an engineering view vs a marketing one is key.

It’s nice if the engineers have time but it’s not an engineering job, the post is hardly marketing it’s a guide.

Finally.

I literally got a Santander credit card just so I had something which would work with my Garmin Fenix. Now I can use my regular bank card.

:100:

They usually reference that they “love to hear feedback” and “read every comment”, but as you say, they rarely engage. Sad times :pensive:

Instead the norm now is:

Hi all, we’ve built this, you’re super valuable to us all, see ya  :running_man:

This is truly wonderful news, I have been waiting years! Now I can finally dump curve and use Monzo directly from my watch. BRAVO!

There is another angle to this.

Starling, Revolut, Santander, Curve, Wise support Garmin Pay in the UK.

Thus in many ways it’s one more thing that competitors have, and Monzo doesn’t.

It may not be significant. But it sure matters for marketing.

Being able to pay with my Garmin watch was the sole motivation for me to get a Curve card. Sometimes a run just needs to be punctuated with a pint! :beer_mug:

As great as this is for increasing Monzo’s versatility, personally I’ll not be replacing Curve on my watch for Monzo as IMO it’s easier to flick to a different card in Curve than it is to change a card in Garmin.

This is fantastic news! I have been waiting for this for a long time and was even tempted to try Starling and Curve for a while, just for this. Yuck, I know right!

This massively simplifies things and excellent that it supports joint account cards.

Paying by watch will now be my default method. Woo hoo!

This is exactly the point. I joined Starling due to Garmin integration.
It makes business sense to attract people to Monzo, and features like this will do this.

I’ve just tried adding Monzo to my Garmin Pay by creating a new virtual card specifically for this payment method - but I get the following error in Garmin Connect. Should it be possible to use a virtual card in this way?

As an aside, I get an Active Card Check from Google when I enter the details in Garmin Connect, which seems odd!

Anyway, I should add that I’ve successfully added my physical card to GP, but would still prefer to use a virtual card.

Think it is only virtual cards linked to pots that you can add to Apple / Google pay/ garmin pay etc.

Out of interest, has anyone else had it that a passcode wasn’t asked for?? And I am fairy sure I’m setting up for the first time as it wasn’t able to be used before…
