I’m Nadzia - a new Product Marketing Manager here at Monzo
I’ve got some super exciting news for those of you who are Garmin watch owners (I know the eagle-eyed among you have already spotted this). Back in 2018, someone asked the all important question: “When will I be able to buy oat milk with my watch ”, well the answer is here… now!
We’ve launched Garmin pay: You can now add your Monzo cards to compatible Garmin watches through the Garmin Connect app. Which means making those quick payments on the go (even if it’s a pastry after your run ) is a lot easier.
How do I set up Garmin Pay?
Open your Garmin Connect app (or download it if you don’t have it already)
Connect your Garmin watch via bluetooth - sync if required.
Select Garmin Pay and follow the instructions. You may be prompted to set a 4-digit passcode if you’re setting up for the first time
Add your Monzo card by entering details manually. After you add your Monzo card, open your Monzo app to complete the setup.
I don’t want to be a negative Nelly on a positive post, but when you have limited resources, I don’t really understand how this ever gets to the top of the list when there are so many things that many people are screaming out for, not just the handful of people that own a Garmin.
I actually switched from Garmin to Fitbit a year or two ago, in part because of Google Wallet support on Fitbit. But good to know there is now support for Garmin Pay should I ever decide to switch back to Garmin.
To be honest the type of people I know with Garmin watches don’t care about using it to pay for things so I agree it seems a waste of resources doing this, but a handful of people isn’t a fair statement lol.
I added it, smooth experience besides the UK being called Great Britain in the list. I had curve added but I have never used my watch to pay, I guess it’s for emergencies anyway.
Card colour is shown correctly in the app and on the watch.
Just some general feedback for Monzo/@AlanDoe/@cookywook in regards to community direction.
I miss the days when the folks who built the products would drop by the community to share the cool new thing they worked on. When you send a product marketer to market it at us instead it just doesn’t hit the same.
Marketing folks are cool too, especially when they stick around and continue to engage, but I think this is more a know your audience issue. We’re not the folks who need marketing too, and product marketers aren’t really the folks we want to hear from with respect to these things.
This is something more suited to your socials and newsletters.
I’m using we a lot, because I’m sure this is a gripe that resonates with many folks and not just me. I believe it’s partly why we don’t see @Peter_G anymore.
Just some food for thought.
There’s probably a lot of other factors involved in them doing this. How easy it was to do. How resource intensive it was. Was it as you speculated, that a rogue Garmin using engineer took this up in their free time?
It goes into my feedback, because I think those are questions that would have been addressed if the post came from someone who built it, rather than someone who came here to market it.
The difference between this post on Garmin pay and this one announcing the tag suggester as an example are night and day, and I’m sure it’s the sort of announcement post most of us here would prefer to read.
It was, which is probably what happened. In the same way that Lewis (deliberately not tagging the poor chap) is trying to get the Chase integration over the line.
Not everything is equal of course and maybe someone bought a new watch and worked a few lunch hours but from a this vs that perspective, I agree that it’s where an engineering view vs a marketing one is key.
Being able to pay with my Garmin watch was the sole motivation for me to get a Curve card. Sometimes a run just needs to be punctuated with a pint!
As great as this is for increasing Monzo’s versatility, personally I’ll not be replacing Curve on my watch for Monzo as IMO it’s easier to flick to a different card in Curve than it is to change a card in Garmin.
This is fantastic news! I have been waiting for this for a long time and was even tempted to try Starling and Curve for a while, just for this. Yuck, I know right!
This massively simplifies things and excellent that it supports joint account cards.
Paying by watch will now be my default method. Woo hoo!
This is exactly the point. I joined Starling due to Garmin integration.
It makes business sense to attract people to Monzo, and features like this will do this.
