Monzo Metal Card

So my girlfriend just told me she got a message in her Monzo Chat (a week and a half ago and she didn’t think to tell me lol :joy:) asking her to take a survey about the metal card, there was a video in it showing the card. Anyone else got it ?

Yeah there’s been some discussion about it over here and Simon said the following

Well, less plastic in the world is good. Even if they start charging a couple quid for lost/stolen cards.

Yea I posted that there as well :joy:

No worries :stuck_out_tongue:

I think they would be a great card to have. For the style, durability and the fact of MasterCard. Also if nothing else they are not plastic but metal which has got to be more eco friendly.

Not sure the eco angle works too well.

Cost of production is presumably a little higher as metal is a ‘harder’ material to work with, and how often do we bin a plastic bank card? Not that often. More concerning will be the number of people who will request a metal card when they already have a bank card that works perfectly well. THAT is not eco friendly at all.

But then hey, they’ll have the coolest card, right. Sod the planet!

I have always wondered what the impact would be if the government introduced a annual charge/tax for each debit or credit card someone holds - it might sound far-fetched but they do this in some other countries.

On what basis would that work though? Would the FCA govern it? Where would the money go?

Which countries do this at the moment, intriguing idea…

Ireland do it for one - its an annual tax which I believe the banks there collect and pass on.

Cheers!

Sure, if you’re painting everyone with that brush…
I didn’t chuck my old card just to get one with ‘Investor’ on it last year. I wouldn’t chuck my current one just to get the metal either.
My guess would be that most Monzo users don’t give a toss about the card in their wallet, and most of them certainly aren’t here in the forum.
Lets switch to metal asap before Monzo grow any bigger and print another million plastic cards :+1:
(I’m on a bit of an anti-plastic march since watching ‘Drowning in Plastic’ last year)
Monzo could charge £5 for replacement cards (replacement not expired) and credit £5 for returned old cards for recycling? Or something to that effect?

Right.

£5 for a plastic card?

All other providers charge around £40 for a metal replacement.

Yes please, sign me up! I tried to invest but the option never came up on the app (i tried so many times)!!!

I will happily pay a one off £40 as I think its fair.

If they put it as monthly and have it anymore than £2 then I would be a bit let down.

Stick at a premium extra for those willing to fork out £40 for the benefit of a metal card.

If its good quality then it wont need replacing and when it expires you could send back to have recycled for a 50% discount on replacement maybe

Why would Monzo want to replace a slightly environmentally damaging plastic card with a super-environmentally damaging metal card?

Also, why the big fuss about plastic cards? The average person probably wastes more plastic in the average day than that from a debit card.

If plastic cards are worse for the environment, you must mean in their manufacture. Im not informed enough on that front, so can’t comment…

Less plastic is good. I know bank cards are a minuscule part of the problem, but such a massive world change is required that inspiration is needed everywhere possible. I’d be proud if my paper free bank supported this effort.

But all null and void of the metal cards manufacture is deemed worse for the environment than the resulting plastic waste.

Never been charged for a bank card in my life. £40 for a card would be a tough sell to most Monzo users.

Metal is environmentally damaging?
