Monzo Metal Card

Honestly no idea personally, and I probably will not get to see one myself, but hopefully someone in the know can drop in to expand up to the levels commercial sensitivity allows

Disclaimer: this is 100% my personal opinion and not any official Monzo position.

It’s about the feeling, it feels very good in your hands. I do think the metal card on its own is entirely a vanity thing without any practical upside? Yes. I would buy a premium subscription again? Yes.

(Right, Monzo employees do not get it for free. We had to pay for it like any other customer. I’ve been paying a premium subscription Ā£15/month for almost a year.)

Hmmmm, do you mean the consensus on this forum, between fintech aficionados, or just in the general public?

I feel the consensus in the latter group is probably somewhere between total indifference and ā€˜it’s a bit tacky’.

I find that suprising actually, thought it would have come in the monzo perks.

All be it just the card, not the insurance parts.

Or at least staff discount :man_shrugging:

I guess the perk is early access to everything, even stuff that may never get released?

Maybe they don’t want to be too strong in encouraging the staff to use Monzo, in case it looks like pressurising? I bet a lot of the staff use other banks (I would!) and they want it to be clear its okay. Also, making the staff pay as normal customers makes them a more realistic test group for feedback.

It’s essentially this.

Offering a free Premium account as an employee benefit could be seen as unfair for any employee who doesn’t have a Monzo account - which opens up a whole can of worms from an ER perspective and it’s much easier not to offer it!

Give it a few months & the hype will be gone :man_shrugging:t3: Look at the hype when the holographic card came out & now look at how many people cancelled.

I suspect that’s more to do with the discounted trial period rather than a lack of hype…

The holographic card got scratched up well easy… mine looks rancid

Definitely, I’m lucky if I had taken the actual card out 3 times over the span of the 3 months to actually use, and even then it was scratched🧐

Another gripe was the card being cancelled, I know it’s my own fault but we should get to keep it, I had to wait nearly a week for my new card but in the meantime I had debit card transactions due such as Netflix etc and I’m also moving house so had a few purchases to make which did inconvenience me but my high street bank saved me

I actually look back now & think ā€œwhy did I buy plus?ā€:zipper_mouth_face:

And that too, I forgot people did get it discounted, but I’m sure a few of those people used it & still cancelled, maybe not because of the card itself, but in relation to the package as it wasn’t what they were expecting or just didn’t want to pay the price for the features it offers. Everyone is different though & it’s their own personal choice if they want to pay for these cards/accounts :yum:

I had it discounted and I’ve just cancelled.
I looked at the benefits on the Plus page and realised I wasn’t really using any of them, and if I was I could live without them.
It’s a shame really.

How much would you pay for it, OOI?

The text suggests it costs Ā£50 to make, so I’m thinking if that is ever an option it’ll cost somewhere in the Ā£75 - Ā£100 range. No idea if that seems reasonable or not to metal card fans?

If the option was there for people to buy, people will buy because they want to own a metal card which is fine.

It’s just like the new iPhone 12 for example, people bought the 11 last year and because the 12 is out, people will pay for essentially the same phone with slight differences.

Debit card is the exact same, except one is plastic and one is metal, I’d personally save the Ā£50 and treat myself to something I’d get more use out of

Interesting, if it really costs Ā£50 to make it seems unlikely they’d start selling it for Ā£40

The reason we don’t get any discounts is because we’re a pre profit company more than anything else.

Lots of banks offer their employees discounts on their services - we just don’t at the moment.

It took me 5 seconds to get this :joy::joy::joy::joy::joy: I actually tried imagining how this would be done
