There are other services included in that fee though, makes it slightly more difficult to compare like for like (on the monthly cost front).
I can see the likeness on the replacement fee though.

With Curve you pay the £50 for the card if you cancel early from what I can tell.
With Revolut you get one free replacement card a year, then itās Ā£40 for a replacement.
Based off that it seems like it costs around £40 for be card.
So maybe the Ā£6.50 a month is fair given thereās a cost of developing a metal card, upfront cost each card, replacement cards etc. Still I would struggle to justify Ā£6.50 a month on top of the Monzo Plus fee for a bit of metalā¦maybe I have to see it first.
Monzo Customers: If you do metal cards I donāt want to pay monthly for them
makes a one off option
Also Monzo customers: but I also donāt want the one off feeā¦
Damned either way it seems.
I personally like the idea of paying a premium price to be different, if the metal card was cheap then everyone would be getting the metal card and it wouldnāt be a very unique offering.
You donāt have to get metal if you donāt want to pay the premium price⦠isnāt that the point?
The issue with the sell is, I feel like itās one of those things youād want to feel in your hands before purchasing - from all accounts in hand (for what it is) itās pretty impressive.
Hereās what @kieranmch had to say when I snooped on his Twitter:
Donāt other metal cards from the likes of curve have contactless?
I think Curve does, Iām not sure if N26 does though?
They do have it. Iām not aware of any metal cards currently issued which donāt have Contactless actually. I think that was sorted out pretty quickly.
Pretty sure most metal cards from UK banks (Monzo, N26 Revolut, Curve etc) all support contactless because theyāre a metal-plastic sandwich (so the contactless signals can pass through). The only ones that arenāt are the Black Amex card because its completely metal and the US Platinum one as well because its fully metal. The UK Platinum Amex is a metal-plastic sandwich as well so that has contactless.
As long as anyone requesting a metal card pays 100% of the costs for designing and making it then Iām not bothered. What I donāt want is to have any of these costs spread amongst other Monzo users who have no interest in a vanity card (which some requesters even admit theyāll never use as they use Apple/Android Pay!)
The Financial Timesā ironic take on the metal card.

edit: itās āMonzo: metal gear solidā. But you didnāt hear it from me
I completely get the appeal of Monzo Metal cards but I think Monzo are making a mistake based on the recent trialling of different price points.
A lot of people Iām sure (myself included) pay money to Monzo for features that they wouldnāt pay for with other banks/platforms, because they like the idea of supporting a business like Monzo who are ethical in their outlook. I know Monzo rely on data heavily to drive their decisions, but the problem with data is that itās retrospective by nature. I fear if Monzo continue with āhighā costings for things like the initial Monzo Plus subscription and Metal cards that itās going to effect that relationship with customers.
Iām not sure Monzo realise how much they are messing up here. Test features, but not how much you can con your customers. There is already a similar product out there from other banks with more features that charge less so maybe they should think about competing with them - there is nothing to test.
Sad to say this but Monzo isnāt what they at least pretended to be at the beginning. Eventually people will get fed up with it.
I couldnāt agree more. I understand they need to become profitable but I hope they find alternative ways of achieving it.
