Monzo.me phone number required

the person has requested you to pay him. You need to get his monzo.me url link - No mobile numbers needed.

OR you can pay him using the ‘Pay your contacts’ feature (not Monzo.me) in which a mobile number is needed (think of this like PayM which needs a mobile number too).

That’s backwards to the way most people including me work though.

It also doesn’t help that his monzo.me link is about 30 characters and damned hard to type after a couple of beers (with hindsight he could have setup a tinyurl but that’s easy to say after the event).

In this situation, they could send you a Monzo.me link but I can see why there would initially be some confusion, if you were trying to use the pay option as the first step.

I’ve just checked the help resources & as far as I can see, there’s no mention that in order to send money to someone in your contacts, that contact needs to have a phone number.

It seems like it would be helpful if that was mentioned :+1: if an alert appeared when you tapped a contact without a phone number, that would be even better..

Do contacts appear as Monzo users if they don’t have a phone number though? All of the above only applies if they do.

if on iOS (not sure about android) you can share the payment link using the share sheet - even by AirDrop so no numbers or emails needed

No, they don’t appear at all… the monzo app simply ignores them.

Ok so it sounds like a help item with a header that goes something like “I’m trying to pay a contact but they’re not appearing as a Monzo user” would be useful?

I didn’t have my iphone on me, just the android phone. Not sure what he had… I think cross platform sharing things do exist but nothing universally popular I’ve heard of, except email of course.

Ah right.

I now understand where @TonyHoyle is coming from.

Pressing the Pay button will first list any of your contacts whom are already using :mondo: with a little Pay button alongside. Those contacts in your address book that don’t already have Monzo, or for whom you don’t have listed as a contact with their phone number, will have an Invite button.

Effectively, Tony wants to pay someone using their email address. Potentially, this could be trickier to type correctly than the monzo.me link suggested above.

In this instance, the two best options are to either

  • Ask for your friend’s mobile number and add them as a contact, or
  • Ask the person to whom you owe money to send you a request for payment via email, SMS, iMessage, AirDrop etc

The latter option is best. It will open straight up in the :mondo: app on your mobile. If paying from a desktop, it will open on a special payment page in a web browser.

I now understand what you are saying, Tony. I’m not sure that it is a problem with Monzo or whether you were just expecting it to work in a way that it doesn’t?

[Edit] this could be trickier to type correctly than the monzo.me link suggested above …someone edited their post whilst I was typing and removed what I was referring to. :-/

Or change the bottom text.

It says ‘Missing a contact? Your contacts must enable payments before they appear as a monzo contact in this list’

Clearly that’s not the only requirement, and is misleading anyway as non-monzo contacts appear in the list with ‘invite’ next to them.

btw. there are two lists both entitled ‘contacts on monzo’ - I think the second heading is a bug, as it lists people not on monzo, not people on monzo.

Which OS? Looks fine on my iPhone.

Android. The iphone version says ‘All contacts’ - which is also wrong as it doesn’t list those without a phone number :stuck_out_tongue:

Iphone also doesn’t have the text at the bottom, so you might not have seen that.

Understood. Thanks for clarification.

To be fair, it is listing all contacts and has an Invite button against each contact’s name. The fact you might have an email for them rather than a mobile number I do not see as an issue. You can invite them on email.

Except if you don’t have a number you can’t invite them as they won’t appear…

I stand corrected. You are absolutely right.

I’ve actually replicated the payment process and not been asked for a phone number, so I have no idea what other people are doing when they try to pay me. Next time it happens I’ll get them to screenshot it for me.

That said I have a hard time making people trust putting their card details into the website and other Monzo users can just hit a couple of buttons on the app, so I might not bother again. Once we have the debit cards (and hopefully Paym support) I think monzo.me will be somewhat redundant, at least for me.

For me, I’ve used monzo.me loads and never used PayM. I like the ease of use, transparency and immediacy of monzo.me, whereas PayM seems a bit opaque and I don’t really trust it. I know of absolutely nobody who knows of or uses PayM.

I’ve no objection to PayM being supported.

Ditto. I know of no one that uses it, and many that don’t understand what on Earth it is.

People get the concept of paying online for stuff - that’s why Monzo Me works so well I think
