Monzo Labs: Connected Credit Cards

Absolute genius

IOS only, not Android yet

Seconding this, but also I use both of my accounts extremely regularly and swapping between them is awkward as heck; maybe the account tab could show both accounts right there? (Though now we can see joint account balance by just tapping the top bar, which helps)

I wouldn’t want my personal credit card viewable in my joint account. This doesn’t make sense for me, it is my “debt” not my partners.

Oh, iSorry

Yeah, I get that. I think this is an example of where the “account” screens now need a little more work.

Are providers such as Amex covered by PSD2 so they have to provide open banking API’s? I thought it only covered current accounts.

I see what you did there :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: iToo?

iGet it! :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks I appreciate the information. Is your statement true though that the login details they get will only allow them read only access to the account? I know that this is not true for Barclay bank accounts, you get partial full access with these login details, and full access using pinsentry on top of your login details.

If you get more than just read only access (regardless if they use it or not), the statement that its read-only is surely somewhat misleading?

By September Credit Cards need to be supported by APIs too.

Hey! We’re planning on allowing you to pick which account to add your cards to in a future release, we kept it at just the current account for now to keep things simple for the test. We actually had it showing in both for a little bit but decided it’s better to explicitly ask where to show it rather than drop people in hot water with unexpectedly exposing their debt! :joy:

Can confirm balance is also correct on my side unfortunately

Can i ask how is the refresh calculated? will this be at the same time everyday or how will that happen?

I think id prefer this to run at batches and update a few times throughout the day in later iterations possible

Great work though @Jami looks seemless and integrates extremely well with the new accounts page

You’re right that with those credentials they have the technical ability to do more than read data, but you’re only giving them permission to read data.

In general the industry is moving away from credential sharing to Open Banking APIs, and this’ll include Credit Cards too later this year - we just didn’t want to wait till then to test the basic ideas of the feature.

Wasn’t my work, was all the smarter people in my team! I’m just the messenger

The refresh is 4 times a day on our side, but when information actually updates will depend on how often the provider updates their balances etc.

Right now we poll the account every 6 hours (6am, 12pm etc), but will be tuning this as we see how usage goes. We also might not pick up new info every time we poll, as it depends on the bank, i think Barclaycard is actually pretty speedy, so perhaps we’ll go a bit faster once we have some more people on board.

All working for me too.

  1. Entering the credit card number was a faff because the field doesn’t switch the iOS keyboard to the ‘Number’ version. Don’t know if that’s under your control though.
  2. Had to restart the app to get new Accounts screen.

Aside from that, all good (if depressing, Barclaycard is my largest debt, but hey maybe a good reminder!!).

I’ve noticed the new section in the iOS app which allows you to remove API access that you’ve setup to third parties. This will make it so much easier to revoke access direct in the monzo app once everyone uses them.

Good work :ok_hand:t3:

In the sense of ‘i promise only to use it for x’?

I appreciate the response, I’m looking just to have a clear idea of how they are working, and if its technical security or policy they use for these details etc. As you say were in a stage of APIs here, none there and its not easy at the moment to see who exactly is using a read-only API, and who’s just promising not to use your bank login details for bad.

Nice one. Thanks for the heads up
