Monzo Labs: Connected Credit Cards

Have tried to connect my card but unable to get past the loading screen after the info pages. The wheel spins continuously but no page loads.

Hey, welcome to the community. Thanks for helping test. Sorry your’e having issue connecting.

When you’ve got stuck with the spinning wheel, are you on wifi, or your mobile network?

Mobile network but with full signal and no other connection issues

Took out a Barclaycard just to test this out. :stuck_out_tongue:
Connection worked seamlessly. Very nice. Displays balance correctly.

I’m sure this is coming but really my only ask is that Monzo would actually do something with the data, ideally transfer money into a relevant pot so I could always cover the balance, or at least update my “left to spend” accordingly. Currently I do this manually and it would be pretty cool if the app did that automatically.

It will be interesting to see where this does get taken next.

For instance, I don’t want either of the things just asked for and so would disconnect my card if they were mandated. At the same time, I’m also against pages of functional option toggles to manage that sort of thing on a ‘per user’ basis.

Doing something useful with a connected account without being horribly prescriptive to the customer is a real challenge!

Would you be against a toggle similar to the “Round spendings to this pot” toggle? Something like “Automatically ring-fence credit card balance”?

I get why it won’t be useful for some people (most?), but as I only use my card for the rewards and building my credit score and pay it off in full every month, I want to make sure I’m not overspending on credit.

Broadly I’m actually in favour of the idea, it’s just the implementation that wouldn’t work for me.

I always pay off my credit card spending but I budget it from the salary period where the payment is due e.g. If I spend today and pay in May, I don’t want to ring-fence any money now but may consider doing so once April’s salary is paid at the end of the month.

To answer the direct question, yes I could live with a toggle but probably not all the other toggles that everyone else would want who did things in yet another way.

I tend to agree with @feathers, whilst the ideas all make complete sense and I can see the reasoning behind wanting it to be functional in the app, it begins to limit how individuals actually use their accounts and credit cards.

Some may whack a whole bunch on their CC and not pay it off for X months, so moving the money into a pot would be useless, as would the budgets taking into account the amount on the credit card.

However if you pay off in full every month and will always do it, it works fine. Maybe having the toggle like the round-ups pot will help, but then when further features start being created and implemented it sounds like it could be a nightmare. Maybe a way round would be to implement the card, similar to the way loans appear on the account screen, and then having functionality from within there, but I’m not sure if that would be good or not.

IFTTT triggers would be an interesting way to go allowing (some) customers to then configure their own rule sets for the management of the money related to CC transactions.

If that’s achievable (i.e. allowing legacy or third-party CCs) that sorts the “pot” toggle out.

“If I spend X on my CC, move X into a Pot in Monzo”

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from working on Summary - it is to keep tools related to budget pretty simple and neutral, and no to make assumptions about how people use them. The trap we fell into last year was trying to be too smart and automate everything.

We’ll definitely add some hooks to make it easier to make payments towards your credit card balance, and maybe link in the data we get from banks to predicted monthly payments, based user preference - but I think we’ll err on the side of giving people simple tools to link together themselves in a way that works for them, rather than make a super-connected smart system.

If I’ll have IFTTT hooks for credit card transactions, I’m sorted.

Any news on when Tandem is going to be added?

From what I understand Tandem doesn’t have an API, and isn’t supported by aggregators currently.

I think they’re working on one, though.

Hopefully you can push them on a bit as that would be good to have

Recently done this. Took a while to connect, but that was due to me not remembering my Barclaycard online password. Straight forward and accurately displays my balance and available credit.

Maybe the next step would be making it possible to pay minimum payments etc via the Monzo app rather than via the Barclaycard app or website??

Is there a plan to add more support in the future? For example, I am a Tandem customer and some kind of integration like this to the Monzo app would be amazing

Sucks, hopefully, they’re working on one. Would be awesome to see.

I tried connecting my Barclaycard but it didn’t complete because I use LastPass to remember my credit card details and I think autofill is disabled on the credentials screen so I couldn’t add my card number etc. I could fill it in manually, of course, so it’s not a biggy. Also, the ability to simply paste seems to be disabled, which could make it harder for some to enter their details.

Also, I have a joint account and there’s no option to add my Barclaycard to our joint account (yet?). This would be really nice. My wife and I don’t use our personal Monzo accounts so don’t need the facility to see our credit card balance there, but we would like to see it in our joint account. Please?
