Card usage
Card payments are widely available in cities. Most card readers do not support Contactless. Some merchants may charge an additional fee for paying by card. However, for the most part, cash remains as the primary method of payment especially for smaller amounts, at smaller establishments and outside of cities.
Most debit/credit card point-of-sale payments use the EMV standard following a directive from the central bank. This means that just like in the UK, your card will be inserted into the machine rather than swiped. Those using a UK Monzo card will have to key in their PIN for the transaction to go through. Contactless payment usage is still relatively rare.
ATMs
The Philippine banking system is moving to EMV and is in its implementation stage, this is the reason some new ATMs are Chip and Pin and older ones aren’t due to them not being upgraded yet. To withdraw cash at the older ATMs turn on Magstripe ATMs in the app settings.
Most ATMs charge a 250 PHP fee per transaction and have a maximum withdrawal limit of 10,000 PHP per transaction. It is advisable to withdraw the maximum amount permitted in a single ATM transaction to reduce fees. HSBC ATMs do not charge an ATM fee, and have a higher withdrawal limit (40,000 PHP for HSBC ATMs), but their branches/ATMs are very scarce and mostly only in Metro Manila, Cebu City and Davao City. Citibank ATMs also do not charge a withdrawal fee for Citibank cards.
