It came as an unpleasant surprise to me when transiting through Dubai that overseas merchantsā card readers can override your bankās contactless limit. Back then the limit was Ā£30, I was fumbling with chip and PIN and voilĆ , the payment went through.

Iāve had experiences before with traditional taxis where Iāve agreed a price upfront with the driver, only for them to try and get more out of me at the destination.
Wouldnāt setting your contactless limit to Ā£50 or something like that have helped prevent things like this when youāre abroad?

I tried setting mine to Ā£45 - the last limit before it jumped to Ā£100, got annoyed instantly with the constant PIN prompts. Ā£50 is still the best limit. Setting the limit to anything that youāre not willing to lose as if it was cash is wild. ![]()
This doesnāt apply to Apple Pay or other digital wallets, only the physical I believe.
Apple Pay can override the debit card limit you set up with your banks, Google Wallet canāt. Both can authorise credit payments higher than the default Ā£100 though. ![]()
And the person in the article was obviously using Apple Pay, else the ā¬570 wouldnāt have gone through.
Unless they used chip and pin but then they mustāve been really stupid to not see it on the screen.
