Quick heads-up if you already have Monzoand are thinking about Monzo
At the moment, you can only have a Monzo account in one country at a time.
So if you currently have a UK Monzo account and you’d like to open a Monzo Ireland account, you’ll need to close your UK account first before signing up in Ireland. Once your UK account is closed, your Irish application should go through automatically.
We know this isn’t ideal, especially if you’re in the middle of moving countries. It’s something we’re actively working to improve so it’s much smoother in future.
For now, closing your UK account before applying will save you time and help avoid any hiccups. If you’ve got questions or you’re not sure where you’re at in the process, feel free to ask here.
Are there plans to make it so UK residents can have a Monzo Ireland account in addition to Monzo UK, which is something some other banks like HSBC allow?
Also, many EU banks still serve the UK, so for UK residents with EU finances, this would also open another avenue of customer acquisition.
I really like my Monzo account. I wasn’t aware about the dual account rule so tried to apply for an irish account. My irish account didn’t go through for some reason. I’m worried if I close my UK account I’ll lose my Monzo account entirely
Surely the team has taken this into consideration. As someone mainly based in ireland but who has dual citizenship and move back and forth often it’s confusing to see my irish account get denied after referring it to over 8 different people I know
Hey, you cannot have both I’m afraid. But once you close your UK account, you’ll be able to set up an Irish account. The reason the Irish account failed to open is because of the UK account! let me know if you have any other questions?
