I believe most car rentals do accept debit cards instead of credit but do force you to take their extended warranty if you do so. Or at least Green Motion do. (It was suggested to me once, and I didn’t go for it, instead I went back home and retrieved my credit card instead as lol no chance in hell)

edit, just checked avis, in their FAQ:

CAN I USE MY UK CREDIT OR DEBIT CARD AT AVIS LOCATIONS ABROAD?
We recommend taking your credit card, because some countries don’t accept debit cards. If they do, only Visa (except Electron) and MasterCard debit cards are suitable.

You can’t use a debit card to hire a vehicle in Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Iceland, Belgium, Luxembourg and Canada. You can only use a credit card to hire a vehicle in these countries – even if you pay online.

Unfortunately we don’t accept cards with Maestro, Solo, JCB or Cirrus logos.

Remember, the name on the card must match the driving licence of the main driver. Someone else can’t pay on your behalf.

And remember to review the terms and conditions when you book, which include everything you need to know ahead of your journey.

According to their T&C GreenMotion do not accept non-credit cards although in practice they do.

  1. Methods of Payment
Green Motion locations accept all major credit cards for payment (Master Card and Visa). American Express and Diners are not generally accepted and may attract an administration charge – please apply locally for confirmation. Credit cards are accepted for pre-authorisations.
All credit cards will be subject to and must pass CHIP and PIN verification, cards without this facility will not be accepted. Un-embossed cards and cards marked Electronic use are not accepted for pre-authorisation. Cards must be in the main driver’s name. Cash deposits/pre-authorisations are not accepted.

Cheques are not acceptable.

Pre-paid cards may not be accepted, please check with your renting branch at the point of booking.

In the event that a customer fails to present a valid credit card or there is a lack of sufficient funds available on the credit card, the car rental agent may refuse the release of the vehicle. In these instances, no funds paid will be reimbursed.

I’m like the inverse of you!

Best people to avoid… tried to return a faulty tv a few weeks after buying it… went through 1.5 months of arguing with them and then decided to follow their stupid procedures, then they lost it after having it for a month.

Got my money back then!

I can’t help wondering if there isn’t an element of discrimination there, since Monzo have stated their open-access to banking that the traditional banks have shunned!!

In any case, they might want to do better vetting of who they rent cars to rather to ensure people are who they say they are and that they have correct details to trace them. Plus the :policeman: are there to deal with this!! :person_shrugging::person_facepalming:
