Mobile Networks

I saw this a couple of days ago, we should bring back the Rabbit brand :rabbit2:

And the Rabbit service. It would, at least, reduce the number of drivers who potter along staring down at their laps.

The tweet said the phones were repurposed for cordless landlines so I’m assuming they were DECT? Was the range better or about the same as DECT these days?

About the same if I recall correctly. Analogue though, not digital.

No, they used CT2 (precursor to DECT). It wasn’t a mobile network in the current sense - it used base stations that were installed around the country. You could also buy a home base station with it so that you could use it with your landline (and many people did, even after the UK “network” was closed). Hutchison Telecom, Rabbit’s owner, went on to launch Orange, but it wasn’t a direct replacement for Rabbit.

The main problem with Rabbit was that it only supported outgoing calls, so it collapsed when the price of analogue Cellnet & Vodafone handsets dropped soon after it was launched.

Interesting (or not) fact - early Orange handsets (one of which I had) said “Hutchison” rather than “Orange” on the display, but this was updated remotely quite soon after launch.

CT2 was digital (FDMA).

My recollection is that it supported incoming and outgoing calls near a base station and you’d have a pager to alert you to incoming calls if you were away from a base station.

I never had one myself but I have a brochure from them somewhere - I’ll see if I can dig it out. I do remember that the brochure says you can make outgoing calls if you are within a couple of hundred meters of a base station but can’t be contacted directly.

Fine over here :joy:

Rocking O2 3G in the middle of Brent Cross shopping centre. Probably my fault for living in the sticks.

I would argue BT but the person in charge of BTs consumer brands is the ex-CEO of EE so…

I find Lebara SIMs useful for EU roaming and much more user friendly than Lyca.

this is fairly typical for me pretty much wherever I go.
Into and out of airplane mode seems to resolve it temporarily, but every time I leave the house, I have to do this, which is getting tedious.

So after a disastrous 4 weeks with Lyca I have left them. Yes they are cheap but here are the issues.

No HD voice
No Wifi calling
Non UK call centers
Technical issues are handled 24 - 48 hours after you call to complain.

So my mobile phone is also used for my business so it’s pretty important.

I was with three for a long time before I switched to Honest Mobile as they are B-Corp and carbon natural it suited my ethos. They are a good company but if you use anything other than an iPhone they struggle with basic functions. I had a tethering issue with my pixel 7 pro and as it’s an important feature for me I had to leave them.

So now onto Lyca. Very cheap which is good but not worth the hassle.

Their system is so buggy and useless. First of all they messed up the switch over and left me unable to make phone calls for a week before the finally solved the issue which meant having to port in a new e-sim and the way they handle it is the most brain dead way of doing it.

There was a billing issue on Sunday (new debit card) so instead of having a way of going online to update the payment method so you don’t loose your service, they just cancelled it. All they did was send me a text to say to resolve this please call customer services…which is closed on a Sunday. So had to purchase another bundle which was at full price instead of the promotional price.

Called customer services on Monday thinking they could easily solve this and reset everything, refund the bundle or at least give me account credit but no they have to had it over to technical department which will take 24-48 hours.

Asked for my pac code and have now switched to EE business, granted more expensive but at this point I’m happy to pay for a better service overall.

Still haven’t heard from Lyca technical department but did get a call from them asking why I requested my pac code and what can they do to keep me :man_shrugging:

On the plus side VoLTE and VoWiFi are coming according to BT’s press release when Lyca switched to BT Wholesale, but there wasn’t a timeframe given

Still not worth it even with it does arrive

Sorry to interrupt the conversation but I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for a US ESIM?

I’m there for 15 days and am moving around quite a bit so am wanting quite a bit of data.

Best I’ve seen is Holafly - 15 days unlimited $47 on ATT & Verizon. I seem to remember seeing something here for it but can’t find the message. Thanks

O2 so pretty expensive iirc

Do you have to pay extra for Go Roam?

Ah yea USA included. Yep that seems like the best deal, thanks
