Meet the next generation: Monzo for Under 16s 🎉

Big risk, not just with the merging, but also with the uncertainty of when it will actually happen.

Unless you’re happy with the current situation, I’d suggest holding off until an official announcement, as the wait could extend for years.

I posted a similar idea earlier. Reposting here as I didn’t realise this thread was here for feedback. My idea is even simpler potentially than having a dedicated link - just automatically forward money based on a payment reference.

We love the new child accounts after having tried many including GoHenry and Rooster from my old NatWest account.

You’ve done a great job and on the whole I have no complaints at all.

It is perfectly understandable and reasonable that the kids don’t have their own bank account number and sort code.

But I would assume there is one thing you could do to make the process a little more seamless than it is currently.

Each child account could have a unique child reference number.

If the parent account receives a payment with a reference that matches the child reference number, you could skip the step of the parent having to transfer the funds and it could automatically be deposited into the child account.

E.g if a payment is sent to 040004 with my account number and a reference of XYZ, if that reference matches my child reference, the payment is sent automatically to the child account, skipping the payment account entirely.

This way, grandparents can be given my account details and the child reference, and there’s no action on my part (or delay) to transfer the money to the child.

Hi,
We’ve been setup with a children’s account that we were hoping to replace his Barclays account with. We’ve since discovered that the account doesn’t have an account number or sort code so family members aren’t able to send money to this account. Only I can see the child account in my app so not even my wife can’t send money to the account either (we have a joint account with Monzo) so it’s not very practical unfortunately.
Am I missing something or is this just a card not an actual account?
Thanks,
Richard

Nope not missing anything, that’s the current form of the u16 account.

Over time, this may change - likely two parents can add and monitor first.

Starling Bank seem to have rolled out a payment link service to their Kite accounts to allow others to make payments to the child accounts.

Hi,
Thanks for the clarification, I’ve advised my son to keep his Barclays account for now and we’ll keep an eye out for any updates.

Does anyone know the exact date that it will be released in November?

I might have missed it, but I’m not aware that any timeframes have been given?

when will this be released?

Do you need to receive the card first to do this?

From memory, no. The card is not needed to setup the Child account.

There is no ETA. It is still being tested

How long were you guys on the waiting list before you could continue?

I think I was on the waiting list for maybe a month.

Is this not addressed still? I got a notification in-app to say I had a “neon ticket” which can help people skip the waitlist for U16 accounts so I assumed they’d added this functionality now and we can link to joint accounts instead

You must be new here.

What’s a neon ticket?

Probably a golden ticket to skip the waiting list, but neon because Monzo.

If anyone remembers.

Just had my 6 year anniversary - 6 years of delusion

It’s a fancy invite to Monzo which also includes a skip of the U16 waitlist
