Would it be best to use Weixin Pay, Alipay etc? I have all the HK apps like Octopus, but I’m unsure if this works on the Mainland.

Octopus will only work in Shenzhen, I think. For the rest of the mainland Alipay will do the trick, though.

I’m going to JiNan/济南.

Then sign up for Alipay’s international edition and add your card. It should work at most places, but smaller merchants like street stalls may not be set up to accept payment from international accounts.

I already have Weixin, are there any Mainland bank accounts (preferably with debit card - looking at the card design thread) I can apply for?

I’ll go get Alipay international
