Search in windows menu for disk management, there is should show all the partitions on the drive.
Did the updates it asked for. Rebooted pc and when I click Ubuntu it just gives me a black screen
Pressed delete on my keyboard a few times and now it’s stuck on purple Ubuntu loading screen
Maybe there’s not enough hdd space? I think the update had something to do with it
Leave it for a bit, if it’s not done after 1hr I would force power cycle it,
Press the power button on the PC until it turns off and then try boot back up.
I’ve formatted the partition and ill increase it to 25gb as the Linux site suggests
It only created 10gb partition
I’ll do what you say if it does it again
Is it normal for it to take ages to load on a black screen after doing updates?
Once I’ve installed it again I won’t do any updates except security ones
I would say it’s not out of the ordinary especially if the computer is an old one without much power.
Fair enough.
I’m doing a clean install and formatting my windows installation as I hope to use it as my main os
Got windows on my USB stick so can always go back,
I’l be honest, from reading this thread it doesn’t sound idea for you.
Ill get there in the end, it’s a challenge and keeps me busy
Always wiling to listen and learn
Still getting the black screen after doing updates. Going to leave it an hour, if no good I’ll reinstall it and only update the security updates
Update : By continually pressing ESC whilst loading it works fine, Otherwise i get a black screen.
Now that i’m up and running which is the best anti malware/virus for linux ?
Try ClamAV
Thanks dude
The error I was getting was this one…
“A start job is running for hold until boot process finishes up”
Fixed by hitting esc when the black screen comes up.
So im on 19.4, and when a new one comes out then what ? Ok done some reading and all you need to do is find the software updater on the apps.
I found ClamTK in the app store however most of it has bad reviews
Welcome to Ubuntu!
My life has been so much more pleasant since I left Windows behind…
Yep. Tried it via USB yesterday and once I got the screen resolution setup properly I decided to use it as my main OS now.
Rhythm Box is awesome for music, so much faster than iTunes
Sophos do AV for linux, anyone used it ?
@Venomx Hi , out of curiosity what is it you are trying to do? This is interesting and exciting (or painful depending on how far you get)
Just try out Linux to see if i like it, i did so i installed it as my main OS now.
All I do is web browsing and listening to music
Now im just doing some research into AntiVirus for Linux, but unless you host a server you dont need it ? Thats what google told me.
Pretty much. Providing you keep on top of software updates, either by the Software Updater, or by typing:
sudo apt-get update && apt-get upgrade
into the terminal, you should be fine.
Thanks!
What does pressing esc do when on the black screen? I was stuck for ages earlier until I tried it and now when I boot I get a black screen until I press esc at which point it thankfully loads fine
Difficult to say without looking at it, but there’s some useful tips here. https://www.techradar.com/how-to/computing/how-to-boot-repair-ubuntu-1315203/3
Running the boot sequence in verbose mode (outlined in the linked article) should show you what it is hanging on. It’s often the graphics drivers, but these bugs are usually squashed pretty quickly.
It did say “start job is running for hold until boot process finishes up” is that any use?
Not to worry it’s only a minor glitch
