Thanks @anon1600231 appreciate your response.
Yes I had this twice.

Yes I had this twice.
Thanks for understanding @SC95!
I think I might know why you received it twice, sorry for the inconvenience there! Could you DM me the dates you received the message by any chance? Just want to confirm
Sadly, this sensible suggestion hasn’t made it into practice. I just asked in in-app chat for the “formal” name on my account to be changed to “Nick” since I recently got my passport changed (which was surprisingly painless). The reply from the person in chat used the term “real legal name”.
Again, both factually wrong and potentially offensive as it implies the name I actually use in day to day life is neither real nor legal. It is both.
It’s not rocket science to both get the terminology right and not be offensive.
In my last chat session my name changed depending on who answered it. I don’t like using my legal name either. The app and my card show my preferred name ok though.
Hey Nick
This doesn’t sound good, please accept my apologies.
“Real” is not a word that should be in our lexicon when it comes to name discussions on support chat, I’m really sorry about this.
Can you please DM me with your email address, and I’ll investigate.
Where do you set your preferred name? I feel like I’ve missed this option…
It asks for your preferred name…even on my card I got my preferred name…not my full name…I am happy
You can contact Monzo and they will be able to arrange that for you.
Just to confirm both @simonb and Leon Scrase from Customer Operations have both been in direct contact to say internal training/documentation will be updated to better reflect the right terminology. Thanks all.
On the same note I want to apologize for the naming of this topic. It wasn’t my intention to invalidate people’s names just because they don’t match what’s on their ID. I should have known better since I have loads of trans friends whose names are real despite some of them not having updated ID yet.
Is it too late to change the topic title, or would that cause too much confusion (url changes etc)?
You can always change it to legal / (given)?
Do you know how I would go about changing the topic title. I can’t seem to find the option anymore. If not could you change it for me
Edit: Thanks!
Would it not be beneficial to have an option in app to change your preferred name. If you need to change your given/legal name you need to speak to cops?
I think this is a really good feature suggestion.
I do like this suggestion, but the preferred name needs to be a reasonable derivative of your legal name - you would be surprised at how many people don’t quite understand that
I thought that may be the case. Makes sense!
How does this apply in the case of a trans person?
We take each individuals personal circumstances into account
“derivative of your ID name”, please!!! A used preferred name IS a legal name.
