Didn’t they previously do this when they launched ITV2? Then changed back to just ITV.
Edit: doh, it does state that! Damn adverts being everywhere.

Some day, ITV will find a way to name their channels and streaming service and stick with it for more than a few years…
I dread to think what this sort of thing costs them in marketing/consultancy/brand etc etc.
ITV
ITV1
ITV
ITV1
Who cares! I’m going to watch something or not watch something, but not because it’s got a number on the end vs not.
I do think this is a massive risk. They want to use the World Cup to show off their streaming service without really testing it properly beforehand. You would think they would want some time for the public to use it before a big event.
You then have ITV Player, ITV Hub, and now ITVX (which so many people have pointed out sounds inappropriate).
I really don’t see why they think a new name is going to suddenly make people use their services.
I can already sense the issues coming. Usually is the case when something is not successfully tested.
ITV2 twitter account has become ITVX. Good way to get nearly a million followers with no work.
They must be confident with it though considering how much they’ve been bigging it up and the fact they don’t seem to want to test it at all before a massive event.
Thought this was the best place to share this.
I think the big mistake was putting it on Britbox. Who’s going to pay money just for Spitting Image?
Matt Forde is one of the most singularly boorish and unfunny ‘comedians’ I’ve seen.
And, for an opposing view, I like Matt Forde and think his Political Party podcasts are entertaining and informative in a way that shows a different side of politicians.
But I still think the rebooted Spitting Image was rubbish.
His podcast is brilliant. I like him because though he’s clearly Labour/Blairite he has a range of guests and treats them with courtesy and isn’t aggressively political with them.
It’s not just ITV who are changing their streaming presense. Channel 4 will be dropping the “All 4” brand and changing it to “Channel 4”. Their channels will also be facing some branding changes.
‘All 4’ will change to ‘Channel 4’ as Channel 4 becomes the first UK broadcaster to adopt one brand identity across its digital and linear channels as audiences increasingly no longer distinguish between digital and linear content. Channel 4’s entire portfolio of channels will also align with the ‘Channel 4’ brand.
So we will have
ITV Player - ITV Hub - ITVX
4OD - All 4 - Channel 4
(And also ITV - ITV1 - ITV - ITV1)
And then just BBC iPlayer because they actually stick with their names rather than changing them every few years.
Also, isn’t ITV being a bit quiet about ITVX launching? You would think they would want to say something about everyone’s apps suddenly changing and having a different name. Plus, there are new features which you would think they would want to share before a launch, which is meant to be this month.
ITV will rebrand the linear channel to ITV1 so as not to be the same as the master brand. Channel 4 will rebrand their linear channels to Channel 4 to align with the master brand.
Which is the correct strategy?
I never liked ITV not having a number considering the rest of their channels do so I think that makes sense. The ITV branding as a whole needs updated imo. The handwritten logo just doesnt look good imo. I think the only channel that has made it work is ITV 2.
I do like the current Channel 4 branding* so im not sure if im going to like what they replace it with to be honest
*with the exception being E4 Extra. Stupid name for a channel.
I still call it 4OD without thinking. It rolls better than All4.
I think it’s stupid to not have a separate brand. If someone says “I’m watching this on Channel 4” I assume live TV. If they say on All4 I know they mean steaming.
Similarly people say “oh it’s on iPlayer you can watch it” whereas if they just said “oh it’s on BBC” I wouldn’t know where they were referring to.
Maybe in time it’ll change but right now I prefer distinct names for online streaming vs live TV.
Exactly. I don’t really get why they’ve decided to do it. There is still a difference between streaming vs live TV so they need to make a distinction.
At some point, I agree, it is going to change, but for now, when live TV is thought of separately for most people, it just seems stupid.
I don’t think they do, however it is a bold move. If someone says programme X is on Channel 4 at 9pm then we know it is the linear channel (and likely simulcast on demand). If I said ‘I watched programme Y on Channel 4’ then it follows it is available on demand as I am talking about something in the past.
With each passing month that is changing though.
