Imagine the combination of the two. We will get there!
Monzo still has some fantastic features.

I don’t have a credit card so I have no choice but to pre auth my debit card.
Planning on going away on my own soon so any tips. (Pay deposit in cash so I get it back immediately maybe) (I don’t want to get a credit card)
I’d check with each hotel individually. They will all have their own policies regarding deposits.
Also, carrying large amounts of cash has its own dangers. And be ready to contact Monzo if you’ll need to withdraw more than £400 per 24 hours.
I know you don’t want a credit card but my advice would be to get one anyway - not just for pre-authorisations but also if you want to hire a car or benefit from Section 75 protection
Some hotels will let you pay in advance. Last few times I’ve been away I’ve always paid for the hotel up front, usually get a little discount for doing so also. Only potential downside is it’s non-refundable.
Having worked in hotels for 30 years I would suggest using the same card to pay with that you per-auth as it then alleviates this issue. It is rare to pay with a different card from the one you used to pre-auth, I never came access that happening very often. But I agree that if Monzo offer the reversal option they should then honour that.
To conclude this Monzo did respond to the complaint raised (I didn’t raise it) and partially upheld it and compensated me.
Have to say I wasn’t wanting them to so great response.
They are going to look into rewording the app too.
I still don’t want one, its sort of a embassment having one. (Gen z where your cars on finance is a common insult)
Section 75 I have no need for, pay the whole amount by debit card and you can chargeback it.
I have no credit history.
If I need the car i’ll drive my own one to europe.
Will ask for a receipt of the pre auth reversal and send it in chat if theres a issue is my best bet.
My parents have pushed me to get one since I turned 18 and i’m not going to budge.
I have massive discomfort with the very concept of them and owing people money at all.
Your choice. But remember, you yourself say you don’t have a credit record.
Apart from the other advantages of having a credit card one is that you will get a credit record - useful if you ever want to get a mortgage for instance.
Just because someone has a credit card, it doesn’t mean you have to use it.
Btw don’t over-rely on chargebacks - that’s a voluntarily scheme run by card networks - section 75 is actual consumer law and much stronger in protecting an individuals rights.
