Also rather late to the party as it took me a while to activate it - the postage itself was super quick

The photo does not really do justice to how pink it is!

Big Mr Blobby vibes off that photo @SouthseaOne :eyes:

Is that a photo on the sands of some exotic beach or you showcasing the card on UK shores?

That’s on the beach in Southsea (maybe I walked far enough for it to technically be Eastney)

So not foreign climbs, though we’re not on the UK mainland either lolz

Naming our neon cards

Hey, I’m Emily  I’m a writer here at Monzo. My role is to help us design and market products that are clear and easy-to-use. For the last few months I’ve been working on our neon cards campaign!

As you all know, our hot coral card is probably our most recognisable brand asset and a big part of why people love banking with Monzo. So when we decided to release 3 special edition card colours, we had a big question ahead of us. What do we name them?

You’ve probably seen by now that we decided on:

  • disco pink
  • sunshine yellow
  • juicy green

We’ll run you through a behind-the-scenes look at how we got there and why the details matter.

It’s worth saying that naming is somewhat subjective; there’s no such thing as a perfect name. But we’re pretty happy with where we ended up!

What we needed from our card names

Psychologist and economist Daniel Kahneman famously said “People don’t choose between things, they choose between descriptions of things”. So we wanted a naming system that:

  1. Was extensible - which basically means we can expand it later whilst making sure the cards still feel part of the same family
  2. Gives us flexibility in future - for example, if we used similar cards for another campaign (although we don’t have any plans to do that right now)
  3. Doesn’t dilute hot coral and our brand identity - our original, signature card
  4. Makes the cards feel more desirable and special - perfect for showing off this summer

So, how do you make a name sound desirable?

By drawing on the senses of touch, taste, sight, sound and smell. Our brains light up when we see or hear sensory words, in the same way as when they’re actually experiencing that thing. For example, if you’re reading a story about running, the bits of your brain associated with running will fire up.

Lots of companies use this method to entice customers - think about how delicious soap and shampoo products sound! We thought it’d work well with a referral campaign where people are rewarded with a physical card that they can see and touch.

The process we ran

At Monzo, we’re big on namestorms. In case the name doesn’t give it away, it’s basically a brainstorm for naming. We got a bunch of people from the project (from PMs to engineers to designers) in a room and got out hundreds of ideas. They were all around summer themes like fruit, flowers and textures. Safe to say there were lots of interesting ones that’ll never see the light of day

From there, we could shape our card naming system:

First word: something sensory | Second word: a colour or adjacent colour

By adjacent colour we just mean something instantly recognisable or associated with that colour, like lime for green or lemon for yellow.

That helped us come up with a shortlist of names, which needed to work well on their own, as a set of 3 and alongside our existing card colours. The Social Banking team, who built our neon card campaign, voted on their favourites. And the winners were: disco pink, sunshine yellow and juicy green.

Let us know what you think and which is your favourite

Now seeing the cards in the wild, I definitely got the short straw by picking green. It’s so cheap looking.
