Introducing Monzo Premium

On the face of it, there’s nothing to get me to switch from my Halifax Ultimate Reward joint account. Think it’s £17 (-£5 if you satisfy some requirement) and it gives AA/phone/home emerg/travel.

I really want to switch to Monzo for everything :slightly_frowning_face:

I have just spoken to Assurant, and you dont need to register a phone, as a couple of mine dont exist. The agent just said to keep all paper work IMEI , Proof of Purchase etc and then you submit them when making a claim.

Sounds like Barclays Tech pack, a lot of paperwork. Nationwide never asked for proofs…

I’m happy to pay £15 for Premium without metal card but with good Breakdown cover

Barclays tech pack or tech add on to Barclays home insurance too costly compared with monzo premium so I’m happy with what monzo has on tech

One thing that I needs updates is the offers section. I’ve been on Plus since it relaunched and the offers section hasn’t changed since.

I had a look at what Revolut offer and they have cashback with certain retailers or exclusive discount codes that you can’t get anywhere else.

Monzo Offers should be up to date and more competitive for Plus and Premium.

The only thing Premium does not live up to is the offers, they are … not competitive in my opinion

Barclays Tech Pack: “You are covered for up to 4 mobile phones per Tech Pack and an unlimited amount of gadgets”

Monzo offers 2 claims per year for phones or for example phone and headphones will be 2 claims?

It needs to be closer to the nationwide flexplus product for me. £50 phone excess. Household phone cover not just personal. And car insurance (or bike insurance!)

Then I’d be sold.

ATM there’s not enough to drag me away from nationwide. The price could stay £2 a month more expensive if it had the features I’ve mentioned above as I’d prefer it all lumped in the monzo app

Not available if you live on the Isle of Man unfortunately.

It’s ok for you to say this here. But the T&C’s say otherwise…

…and if we aren’t happy then “but Samw on the forum said…” isn’t going to cut it.

Anyone know yet - does the metal card have a sticker with your card no / name etc slapped on the back (like Curve’s and Revolut’s do). This looks (I think) a bit shoddy even before they start peeling off…

It’s not fully metal. It’s got a plastic side to allow for contactless so I guess details are printed on that.

Apparnelty yes, they will.

They are contactless so they will be Metal - Wireless Layer - Plastic

Maybe unkindly - I notice a lot of media commentators suggesting that it is because a metal card is better for cutting certain items…

Revolut is NOT a registered bank. I’m sorry but they aren’t comparable.

Not excusing Monzo’s offering though. Very poor effort.

I think the offering is quite good and if I needed travel insurance and phone insurance at this time I probably would have gone for it.

However, I already have existing travel insurance and even once that expires, I don’t see myself travelling internationally for at least 6 months or until a vaccine for Covid has been delivered and is more generally available. As such, it just comes down to the phone insurance, which I already have as an add-on to my home insurance (although, checking quickly online, it would cost £7.99/month separately).

As such, I’m going to stick with Monzo Plus for now. For me, the bespoke categories, virtual cards and interest are worth the fee for me. I do hope they roll out Plus and Premium to join accounts though, as my spend goes increasingly through that account now and you would presume it would be an easy upsell to increase revenue without having to reinvent the product much.

@maxwhite - with regard the lounge access, how does this work for folk who’ve had their preferred name printed on their card, in relation to LoungeKey’s rules?

[…] only the person named on the bank card will be able to use the card to access the lounge. The lounge will check the name of the card holder against their boarding pass and their identification card / passport.

A customer’s preferred name won’t necessarily be on their identity card or boarding pass. Has this been thought about internally?

It seems to be changing across the board - Nationwide has announced a similar change for any holidays or trips you book after January 2021:

I think it’s the way it’s written that is problematic.

The T&Cs read as though they will cover changes to FCO guidance provided you weren’t aware before travelling (i.e. it changes during the flight or after boarding etc), but specifically, if they aren’t caused by a pandemic (any pandemic, because they then become ‘known events’):

And then reaffirms this in the ‘not covered’ section:

Something to think about - claiming on your house insurance may impact future premiums.

Plus, given the price difference of £7.99 on top of your plus membership, you’re already at 12.99. If you max out the interest, you’re in the same region price wise.

This is pants and it wont save monzo. I have a Santander Select Credit Card for £15 per month which gives you unlimited free loungekey access. £24 discounted access would be £48 on a return trip.

I really want this but I think Monzo need to make it much clearer both here and in writing on the contract what the deal is with the phone insurance. Does the provider itself have a website?
