Introducing Extra, Perks and Max

@coffeemadman

No - I currently have the app-based Trainline Railcard but do all my train travel bookings online through LNER.

You just have to check a box to confirm you have an eligible railcard.

I don’t see how this is competitive, for a user who wants family insurance or for a user who wants premium features

With Nationwide FlexPlus and Revolut Metal, (for a combined cost of £27.99) you get:
Travel insurance for your family, worldwide
Mobile phone insurance for the whole family
Vehicle breakdown cover in the UK and the rest of Europe

FinancialTimes Standard Digital
WeWork
Deliveroo Plus
Nord VPN (and some other apps, but they don’t seem that useful)
Global Medical emergency insruance up to £10M
Everday purchase insurance
Discounted lounge access
Free lounge access for you and 3 friends if your flight is delayed
Travel insurance

I have a Network Railcard, which expires in July, so this works out cheaper for me to get Perks, and then a renew my card, so that’s a win. As is the Greggs freebie, it will pay for itself by the end of July.

I’m tempted by the Perks offer. I would use the Greggs benefits and additional interest which would cover most of the cost and allow me to see all my accounts in one place.

Plus I can benefit from one of the railcards. Even one trip a year using that will likely cover the balance of the cost.

I can’t benefit from O2 freebies (as their signal is dire for me) and happy with my energy provider so wouldn’t use Octopus.

Because it doesn’t have to be competitive. People will pay it (as they have done with Premium) regardless of what else exists.

This isn’t choosing to go to Tesco or Aldi and flipping between them each week, people are ingrained in their bank account.

I know for some customers this won’t happen for another couple of years, but they haven’t said what happens when metal cards expire if you have premium and chose to stay on that product. What will the replacement be? or will there be a forced move?

Yes would have been fine :+1:t2:

Anyway there are also two new badges:

I’ve signed up to Perks, plan to keep this with Nationwide Flex Plus as it is such good value.

Loved the sign up process, great design.

If you have an old Metal card, not currently active, could you somehow reactivate that for a user who is on Perks? @rossmonzo

You beat me to it. Not everyone is looking for the best price, or wants to bank with Nationwide or Revolut. I think a lot of the people on this forum are money-savvy and happy to switch around, this is not the case for most of the population (as much as it would benefit them).

Slight panic there but no, it doesn’t:

Fair enough, I’m probably going to go down to Extra and combine it with Revolut or Nationwide though

I do think most people would atleast take a look at the competition before signing upto a £17/mo (£22/mo w/ family benefits) 3-month minimum, people are switching bank accounts all the time now for switch rewards

At this point, they could introduce a ‘priority support’ to speak to people in the UK who can understand the issue and not get bounced around 5 agents everytime.

That would be swell.

I asked because of this note.

Firstly, congratulations on the launch @rossmonzo and @avb.

TL;DR
It’s good for some, not so good for others. Feels like a miss

The below is of course subjective and based on me applying the product to my needs. Sorry to be specific, but I think as with any product it’s important to specify that, as other peoples mileage will vary.

I’d been keenly looking at what next for Premium, as I was really hoping for something magical that would bring me back to Monzo. Sadly, this ain’t it, for the reasons below.

Where I think this is good, is with Extra. Acknowledging the payoff towards development costs (which is an assumption) reducing the cost to those who just want the basics, I think is a good move personally.

Here’s where the constructive feedback comes though…

Perks/Max
Again, these plans feel like they’ve been designed with a very specific user in mind. Young, affluent, lives in London and likes to travel/has disposable income. Things that make sense to them, such as free Greggs and cheaper railcards don’t make sense to me, not as young, lives up north, has a family (which is a huge deciding factor for me as to where I bank with)

Max
This is where I’m, personally, massively disappointed. I’d been on the fence around moving from HSBC Premier to Monzo Premium for a while. But, since it was evident that something was changing, I held off. I’m glad I did. Personally speaking, the new Max plan is not value for money. You’ve quietly removed the good benefits of Premium, such as lounge access and default family cover for travel insurance and made this an extra perk.

Two points of specific feedback here.

  1. Cost - Granted I get travel insurance for free with HSBC premier. But, it’s also significantly better in terms of coverage. Case in point, a limit of £2,500 for baggage vs £750 - the former always felt it was more orientated towards an actual family, vs a single-pringle going abroad. But, even if I compare it to elsewhere, you’re now asking for £22 a month to get what I could get with both Nationwide (£13) and Lloyds (£21). I struggle to see why I’d go for this over them.

  2. This wording is disingenuous

Granted, the T&C suggest that it’s now personal but if you were used to premium being family travel cover as a default, you might miss it’s now personal only. I feel this should be highlighted clearer.

Sorry to be so negative, I really didn’t want to be and I wish you well with the launch. Just that it’s a no for me, for specific reasons which I hope are useful for evaluation in the future.

Quite clear…

There you go.

Seen a couple of comments around lounge access :airplane:

We chose not to include discounted lounge access as our research showed that a very small number of customers were getting the full advantage of it. If you are currently a Premium customer you can keep your subscription and the lounge access benefit.

Is it possible to hide the Upgrade button that displays at the top of the screen for people who want to stay on Premium for now?

It’s a bit annoying to have it there when i’m already paying £15 a month
