Intro to Core Experience šŸŽ‰

And another thing we perhaps take for granted: roundups.

It would be good to look again at whether the Ā£1 minimum spend is sensible. Chase doesnā€™t have it and weā€™ve had a steady stream of folk on here over the years asking why their Ā£0.34 purchase didnā€™t round up.

And then there are direct debits and standing orders. Iā€™ve an IFTTT applet set up to keep my balance at a Ā£n.00 value but itā€™d be good to be able to have everything rounded natively in the app.

And while weā€™re talking about roundups can we do something about ā€œaccelerated roundupsā€ in Plus/Premium - which donā€™t actually round your balance.

@chloelawrence from the team has posted over here to get some more input from everyone regarding payments (she spotted your post @Peter_G ) :eyes:

Thank you so much @Peter_G , it is really helpful to see all your suggestions and I am making notes of everything. If anything else comes to mind, please do continue to share! As @AlanDoe said, weā€™re definitely keen to collect as much feedback on this as possible so Iā€™ve launched a post specifically for this to understand everything thatā€™s working and not working as much as possible :ok_hand:

Not sure if this is in scope of the project for the team, but I think one of the main things that make using Monzo a pain is the incredible amount of clutter everywhere.

It might be more of a New Navigation issue but having returned to using Monzo as my main banking hub, I now remember why I left in the first place. There are just so many random things everywhere. Buttons here, banners there, repeating pushes to do stuff, itā€™s really, really hard to do any actual banking.

For instance, I have the refer a friend button at the top of the Home Screen. But when I go to ā€˜Paymentsā€™, there is a huge banner asking me to refer a friend, too. I donā€™t have any friends! And certainly none who wouldnā€™t have Monzo already. I also know how to split a bill, thank you, but still, canā€™t make the prompt go away.

Same for Plus. I have the Plus button at the top, but also the useless Plus menu at the bottom. And when I go to ā€˜Helpā€™, itā€™s everything but helpful. Thereā€™s quick links, suggested topics (whatā€™s the difference between the two?) and even a link to the Community but no actual button for chat.

As much as I love the staff engagement, the direction of travel overall, and the excellent new products, the core app experience is so awful that it makes me dread having to do anything in app at the moment.

To go with @Peter_Gā€™s joke in the other thread from this morning perhaps itā€™s time to get a photocopier and see what other banks are doing. My one true wish for the app is to have a ā€˜Discoverā€™ tab where you can do all the upselling to Plus, all the referral banners and overdraft prompts that you want, but away from my eyes and fingers unless I directly want to seek out ways to do more.

100% agree with the clutter thing.

My dream would be that, during the onboarding process, Monzo ask a few simple questions that allow it to determine what you care about and what you want to see in the app. Then it can switch different widgets/sections on/off based on this. You can still go in and tweak afterwards, you just donā€™t get everything thrown at you at once (but you do get to see what you want to see broadly).

Why I donā€™t use Monzo, currently, summed up in one line

Thereā€™s definitely lots more crap on screens that I donā€™t need or use lately.
Even the plus trial thing just rubs me the wrong way.
I get advertising features, but advertise once and then let me remove it (even if itā€™s just a month or so).

What sort of things? I donā€™t have anything that really bothers me, but maybe Iā€™m more willing to ignore the things that donā€™t interest me, or might be because I already have plus etc.

One example for me is the ā€œGetting startedā€ section on the premium tab. I have no interest in using round-ups or virtual cards, and I have had Monzo Premium before so I know that these exist. There is no way that I can see to dismiss this section (which takes up most of the screen on my phone).

Iā€™m pretty sure this is dismissible ā€¦ as it was raised previously and made to be dismissed. At least I believe it is/was on plus - as I no longer have that area. I just have the huge list of items belowā€¦

Thanks for telling us about this @ndrw! Weā€™ll be exploring the payments tab in the next few months and will make sure to add this to the list - @Heldiney :eyes:

@giorgio Not sure if this sort of thing is covered by your team or elsewhere?

One thing at the moment that could be improved for me is a way to split a bill from the transaction screen without having to click through loads of screens. I use bill split quite a lot and it is annoying having to go into the transaction, then select bill split, then select the person, then select the amount etc I would love it if I could just click on a little icon next to the transaction and it then takes me straight to the screen where you select who to split the bill with (or something similar).

Thanks for the feedback! @Heldiney this is something youā€™ll probably be interested in!

Matt, are you iOS or Android? Weā€™re making some small tweaks to the payments tab that let you split a bill directly from there, have you got any thoughts on that? Interesting idea about going straight from an icon

Thanks @giorgio! I am on iOS.

Iā€™d need to see what you mean really before I gave my thoughts - canā€™t picture what you mean. But in terms of how I use bill splits, I would purchase something which would then pop up in my transaction feed (which is the first thing that loads up when I then enter the app). Then I click on the item in the list, I then have to scroll down the screen to find where to split the bill, I press that button and then have to choose who to split it with (99.9% of the time this is my partner), I then have to press on them and click next, I then input the split and click request money. It just seems very long-winded!

So being able to press a button next to the transaction allows me to not have to click into the transaction, then scroll and then press a button.

Is there any particular reason why the option to bill split is so far down the transaction screen? Again, having the little blue bill split icon somewhere near the top would be preferable so I donā€™t have to scroll every time (I never add receipts, and do bill splits a lot so it makes no sense to me why adding receipts is so high up on the page). I donā€™t have the data for how many people attach receipts but I would assume it is less than the number of people splitting bills (could be totally wrong!)

Hey Core Experience team, do you have any plans to work on the Shared Tabs feature? Itā€™s my most used, and it hasnā€™t been touched in years and is still quite a flaky experience (Monzo Plus to non Plus sharing never auto tags Categories correctly).

Iā€™m assuming itā€™s a rarely used feature compared to others, but wondering if thatā€™s in your plans?

Hey @chrstphrtlbt,
We arenā€™t actively looking into shared tabs at the moment, but that doesnā€™t stop me from exploring the problem space :eyes: Could you please tell me a bit more about your experience using these? What do you like? What could we do better?

Iā€™m a heavy shared tab user as all our household spending goes through me then is reconciled using a shared tab.

My two wishes:

  1. better controls of who owes what (more granular options?) not sure what it would/should look like
  2. this is the big one: more transaction types (including, specifically, Flex and Connected Accounts). Iā€™d pay for Plus or whatever just to have this.
