Including balance on transaction notifications

@anon83676639 You still get daily spend notifications, if that’s what you mean.

No… used to get push notifications when spending that said something like…

You spent £3.54 at ASDA. Your remaining balance is £1984.21

Was really handy to keep track of how much money I had but the feature disappeared a little while ago when current accounts were introduced

I believe it was changed for the Current Account because Monzo realised that it wouldn’t scale gracefully. For people having their salaries paid in to Monzo, their push message would be “Your remaining balance is £18,984.21”, for example.

The change did throw me a first, but I’m used to it now. Though it would be nice if Monzo could bring it back in some way. Either a user option for “Show remaining balance in push notification” or by using a threshold and showing remaining balance under, say, £50 or £100.

I agree. An option in the app to show or hide this would be really useful. I have an iPhone X and notifications are hidden unless it recognises my face so having the balance on the notification would be great for me as I would be the only one able to see it.

Has a widget ever been suggested? I’m not sure if iOS has them, but it would certainly be possible on android. HSBC has a fast balance option so you can view your balance in the app without logging in

iOS has a widget already

Just curious, what job do you have? I’m very interested in a job that earns £18,984.21 in one hit!!! :joy:

This certainly does scale, push notifications are not that hard to add and there are other providers, even self hosted ones that can handle it apart from GMS.

I’d like to see this feature come back as well, and I’d very much like to be notified when features like this are taken away - I was fairly certain something was wrong with my phone.

EDIT: for clarification, I’m on Android 6, with microG instead of Google, with upgraded to currency account Monzo, up to date Monzo app. Push notification from other apps - eg. easyjet - work just fine, but I’m not getting any balance and spending notifications from monzo either, at all. No immediate, no spending.

Can I second this.

I’d really like to see my remaining balance in my push notification. I don’t need to know what I’ve just spent, as I see that when I pay, the info I need is what I’ve got left to spend.

An option to show remaining balance, or not, would be ideal.

Just to consolidate my ask buried in some other threads…

Can the current resulting balance be added to the notification of a transaction? It would save going into the app to check what the balance is after I spend (or receive) something!

Hey Wibbly - there’s been quite a few requests for this. I’ve moved your post here - consolidating it into a ‘bigger voice’.

Are there any plans to add this option bank into the app?

I really need to see what balance I have remaining so I can budget.

I’m considering not using Monzo if any of the other app based banks offer this instead.

It’s annoying that it was a feature, and was removed.

So I’m thinking of leaving Monzo as there’s no balance widget or balance push option. It;s a shame as otherwise it’s a great app, but as a money managing card it’s not very useful.

There is a balance widget. Well there is on iOS anyway.

I’m on Android, no widget yet.

Apparently there was balance notification on push, and it was removed.

Threatening to leave Monzo every few months isn’t going to get the feature added.

You need to properly explain the benefits, why it needs to be done and so on. Then encourage others to support your idea

I can understand why it’s not included, and I think it’s all down to transactions that are subsequently adjusted, i.e. foreign currency and pay-at-pump (also TfL? there may be others I’m unaware of!)

If you were to get fuel using a pay-at-pump service, you’d get a notification that you’ve spent £1 / £99 (can’t remember which way round it is now) initially (as now) with your balance shown, but that balance would be wrong moments later when the true figure is applied. You then need a follow-up notification, with the true balance, right?

This forces Monzo to introduce notifications for changes of transaction value (which don’t currently exist as a thing). Probably a fair bit of work to do.

If you go abroad for a week or two on holiday you’d end up with notifications at the time you make transactions, followed by notifications at random when the true currency exchange value is applied and the debit value is adjusted by a few pence, which could be several days later. You can guarantee people won’t like that, so then Monzo have to consider some kind of “show this kind of notification, but not this kind of notification” option.

It’s a lot of work just to show a balance.

I kind of get that a lot of people wouldn’t like it. I would like it, though. Maybe a notification tab in the app, where various notification types could be turned on or off would be an idea.

I regularly make my Monzo balance a nice round number on the first of the month, and when I did this on Monday, noticed half an hour later that someone had pinched 10p from my account. Took me half an hour or so to realise that it would have been a foreign transaction settling.

Oh absolutely, I was merely playing Devil’s Advocaat there.

No matter what new thing you do, someone will want to NOT see it. I encounter this constantly when developing, it’s a nightmare.
