Huge uptake of Monzo with 16-24 year olds

I’m sat at the front of a bus in Newcastle watching people pay for their fares. So many young people were paying on their phones with Monzo. Does anyone have any idea about the demographic uptake? I’m not sure I’ve ever seen any young person use startling or revolut.

I’m surprised you could actually see their phone screens. The machine must be very low down. I can never see anybody’s phone screen when I’m sitting on a bus, not even when I’m in the front seat.

I’m sure there’s a demographic split in one of the financial reports. Not sure if it’s huge though as I don’t sit at the front of a bus to check.

Yeah there’s a seat right at the front and the payment machine is facing outwards. I could see everyone’s payment method.

As a bus driver, the vast majority of cards I see are Monzo, NatWest and Halifax.
I won’t mention what bus drivers, not me, call people who sit in those seats right at the front :zipper_mouth_face:

Out and about I would say I see NatWest/RBS and Monzo the most. When I’m at shops mostly used by students, I also see a decent amount of Santander since their student account is a good one

Hey, my kids grandparents buy them premium bonds and they do very well out of them! We’re always getting winners letters through!

I recently became a bus driver and have noticed a lot of Monzo cards being used by young people!

Yes. I’ve just left a secondary school, and the second we all turned 16 we joined Monzo. I still rave about it now, best bank going.

How do you know it’s the best bank if you haven’t tried all the other banks? In fact, if you’ve just left school, have you tried any of the other banks?

Given that until very recently U16s couldn’t have a Monzo account (and even now it’s a pot with a card in a parent’s account) , they’ve probably used at least one other bank until 16.

Interesting seeing the search trend for Monzo and Starling on Google. Starling appears to have stalled a bit compared to Monzo

Really interesting. You can, sort of plot key events of that. Even to start, monzo tanks right about 2020 and fears of it going under and around 2022 starling goes off the cliff.

I’d imagine that a shorter period would show a much steeper difference between the two, since it’s averaged a little at scale

I’ve used Nationwide, NatWest, Starling, Halifax, Bank of Scotland, Wise and also got some bits with the NS&I too.

Monzo is the best.
