Huge switching bribe from Clydesdale/Yorkshire Bank/B

A letter confirming details of the DDs and SO being transferred.

I called asking to switch my Halifax account to my existing B account. Was told that there was a 5 day wait for a callback! Hardly surprising with the current offer.

Wait a minute! This link leads to a 404!!! https://www.youandb.co.uk/250-campaign/

Have they ended the offer?

Correct.

Here’s the quote from the Money Saving Expert weekly tips email page:

"Update. 11am, Tue 31 Oct: This £250 switch offer proved extremely popular (as we warned), and the deal is no longer available. To see the switch deals currently available, take a look at our Best Bank Accounts guide. "

I’m still waiting for my account to be set up, but it appears that the offer has now ended. And you only qualify if the CASS process is started before the promotion ends.

I guess B Bank was a Yorkshire bank brainchild so got the “cooler” sort code and Clydesdale Bank side jumped on board after they planned to launch it. Some sort code checkers link 05-00-05 formally to Yorkshire Banks Mortgage division in Glasgow.

This link still says the offer Online Banking: Personal & Business | Virgin Money UK
but probably more of an oversight than hope. The moneysavingexpert thread says the bank confirmed it over the phone to new applicants it was over.

The T&Cs say:

If we do withdraw the offer, you won’t qualify for the payment unless you have already instructed us to undertake the Current Account Switch before the offer is withdrawn.

I rang them yesterday and “instructed” them to switch my account but was told that I’d have to get a callback. It’s picky, I know, but I’d argue that I issued an instructed them to switch my account before the offer ended.

If you haven’t opened the account yet you’re not tachnically a customer so you can’t instruct them to do anything and they can’t switch anything to your non-existent account.

That’s how I’d argue it, anyway.

Sorry, I should’ve mentioned, I’m already a B customer.

Interesting…

Anyone else show interest?

Me too.

Trying Starling, Monzo and B.

A negative for the B though is the lack of instant notification of a transaction. It takes a while like the normal current accounts.

Interest rates are so negligible that they cannot really be a serious consideration.

Earned £0.06 interest from Starling today. Woop, woop

Oops, no, can’t afford that , not even a :chocolate_bar:

:joy:

I do have to say, this is the most annoying aspect of B Bank. I’m all for a fun and a multi coloured pastel looking account but a person dressed as a chicken backflipping every time you log in. Please don’t go this way Monzo!

What do you have against the big chicken? I find it fun

Is there instant spending notifications on B or do you still wait 2 or 3 days for the money to leave your account.

It’s not very professional? And when I open my banking app I don’t want to have to wait for a chicken to backflip to see my balance

That’s a somewhat inconsistent argument though: I suppose many would think that using emojis isn’t very professional either, and Monzo is largely praised for this on this forum.

I wholeheartedly agree with this, but most banking apps I have used (NatWest, Barclays, TSB, Santander, Yorkshire Bank, B, Halifax, Deutsche Bank) use some loading screen with comparable or longer delays (Monzo, Starling and Revolut don’t - see a trend?!).

Yes they do…

Revolut:

They do have quicker startup times than most banking apps I’ve used though (the exception being Commonwealth Bank in Australia - they have the best banking app I’ve used, challenger or legacy).

Yeah agreed, apologies.

Well, I wouldn’t call these loading screens.

These are splash screens, which are shown for a second or two on app start. Splash screens are often needed as the app data needs to be loaded into memory, and this will take a finite amount of time, and you need to show something. (For all three apps they are shown for no more than 1 second for me.)

The loading screens that I mentioned show after entering the PIN/password/fingerprint/whatever, and for a much longer time (Barclays’ regularly takes more than 30 sec, leading my screen to time out, and thus being logged out of the app again, and if you poke the screen too much while the loading screen shows the app will crash…). They are either the result of bad design (servers being too slow to respond to authentication requests in a reasonable time) or of the design team wanting to show off their cute animations, or maybe because it gives a feeling of security if you see a lengthy “Logging you in securely” message (“surely, if it takes that long, it must be super-duper secure!” )

The splash screen can be unavoidable for larger apps, or on slower devices (although some apps also like to show them when there is no need - again just to show their design skills - and that practice also needs to die). The loading screen is an atrocity (especially if - as I suspect is the case - it’s for the last reason).
