Maybe you can watch your nearest branch get further away in real time as they close branches…
Ah, my friend works here and has mentioned this. We were talking about Monzo, incidentally.
That’s terrifying
Biggest issue with this app is it’s too little too late. Even 86% quicker login means it still takes 6-10 seconds.
Perhaps it’s good but the promo video did a poor job of selling it! Barclays is no better, everyone told me to switch from HSBC to Barclays for a better digital experience but I don’t see it. App login is slow and you can’t do much with it in reality.
Santander login is horrifyingly slow
I suspect what happens with the bigger banks (and a lot of companies) is they don’t see mobile as something they do, just an addon… so they outsource it to the lowest bidder, and get a servicable but ultimately crap job… the people writing the app don’t understand banking, and the bank doesn’t care as long as the box is ticked.
For Monzo of course the app is at the core of the way people interact with them, they realize this and have an in-house team of people who know what they’re trying to achieve. The result is something that is pretty much guaranteed to be better.
This is definitely one of the main problems. One of Monzo’s co-founders wrote an excellent blog explaining the difference between digitised banking (porting the legacy service to a basic digital interface) & digital banking (designing a service that’s truly digital & is able to leverage the latest technology as a result).
Saw this today
This might be what your friend was talking about. It does sound exiting indeed!
HSBC’s new app, explained (kinda). http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-41429379
Interesting how the more traditional banks are looking at what challenger banks are doing.
“The challenger banks are offering new user interfaces and experiences, and very intuitive design features, so they’re much more attractive to younger people,” said Markos Zachariadis.
I’d be intrigued if they can manage instant notification, because without those you’re still basically working blind and adding categories doesn’t help that.
My hunch is the legacy systems they acknowledge are difficult to work with won’t allow it.
Ageist comments like this are unwelcome and inaccurate. Many people enjoy intuitive design and new interfaces / experiences.

Barclays sent out an email, today. Well, they did it a second time as they cocked it up the first time.
The email then went in to talk about some interesting stuff:
lol there is no way I would give some random bank person on the phone my login details
If I were Barclays I’d be more concerned about their millions of customers who received the spammy email the first time and didn’t give fraud a second thought. But then it’s easier to just reimburse the victims of fraud than to investigate and target the perpetrators.
I deleted the first email. You’re right in everything you say!
Yes this falls under the new banking regulation PSD2. Banks have to adapt their infrastructure to allow third party connectivity via secure APIs, upon approval of the customer of course. This regulation will come in place early 2018. Banks are gearing up for this hence why Barclays already upgraded their app and HSBC will release a new app towards the end of November 2017 (according to my customer service rep).
I believe HSBC have already launched their new app. I’ve been using a new one for a few weeks now and it’s night and day better than the old one.
You can login with TouchID and also send payments without setting up the payee beforehand on desktop (which apps like NatWest have had for a while, abliet with restrictions on payments). It’s certainly a nice upgrade over the old one.
I wasn’t prompted to download this however, I just did a search on the AppStore. It combines with the current app to transfer all your details over too, so didn’t require any re-entering of details etc which I thought was pretty good. Catching up with everybody else it seems?
I think you’re right, its not an update to the old app, they have just put another app in the app store so there are now 2 HSBC apps the old one and the new one. I imagine not many people will know this or realise.
Damn, I sent that guy the link to the vimeo the moment I put it on here and I didn’t even get a plug
