I agree, being an existing customer with some of the other banks they’d just run an ID check through the CRAs upon application, leaving no hard searches.
But HSBC/FD on the other hand want to do a hard credit check for almost everything.

I’ve just tried this - both online and via the app - and my personal details were pre-populated when I tried to apply for a HSBC credit card.
Maybe it’s changed since I last did this ![]()
For anyone interested in the global money card, it’s all I’ve used this year, the first without Monzo.
Apart from a patchy week in Corfu where acceptance was a little tricky, it’s worked flawlessly in Skiathos and now Turkey.
It doesn’t support Lira, which surprised even the folk at HSBC so had to use it with GBP and Euro.
And, unlike Monzo, it works flawlessly on Both TUI (ahem), Ryanair and EasyJet.
It’s no where near as advance as Monzo of course but a good effort I think.
Applied for an account with HSBC last week, spoke to an agent today on the phone who said it’s still in the initial application stage waiting for someone to review.
Crazy how slow this whole process is.![]()
Yep - not know for speed. Mine took two weeks from form to use, hopefully your’s will be sooner!
They’re apparently very busy with applications at the moment. Wonder if it’s to do with all these offers they’ve currently got on.
Whoops
I did notice this today while shuffling money on payday…
Thankfully I get paid on the 23rd so just about avoided it.
Working OK now (for me, anyway).
Mine’s still offline …
Still down for me
Mine still down but got nothing in it anyway
Mine is still down and has my payday money fortunately I have money in my other accounts
I’ve actually been playing with the idea of trying out HSBC as my main bank (instead of Monzo), but things like these don’t really give me much confidence…
Half a (work) day later and it’s still down for me
Now you know why it’s called Black Friday.
Still down for me. Well not ‘down’ as such - but the money protection feature is still activated.
If you can’t get at your money, you can’t spend it or give it to scammers. Well played HSBC.
Every bank will have issues at some point, the same as every hosting company and large website (even AWS and Facebook) can have outages. I can’t remember the last time HSBC had any issues so it’s no a common occurrence. Only way to avoid it ever being an issue would be keeping your money in cash under your mattress.
Indeed. Unfortunately for HSBC, payday and Black Friday is particularly bad timing.
