What about Direct Debits notifications? Do they work please?

They do.

HSBC are the closest high street bank to how Monzo do things. Notifications for everything in and out of the account (which actually make a noise/vibrate) and upcoming DDs and BACS payments shown greyed-out in the transaction list.

Is anybody that opened and used HSBC HK still around?

tried to top mine up to use the QR payments, but I can’t seem to be able to send money to it

I linked them in global view online, now they show up in each up but the UK transfer between function is broken, giving an error, although the HK app to UK doesn’t have that error so seems like it would work

After some digging I found that the global view is only officially supported for Premier customers

tried via Wise for the account number local transfer, and it was rejected and refunded each time

Thank you both for reply re app notifications. Forgot to mention I use an android phone. Can one of you confirm it works with android please?

It does - I have a Pixel 6a as a spare phone and it works fine.

This sounds great. I’ve liked RBS and Lloyds/Halifax/BoS notifications as well but for LBG they are sometimes - but in fairness, not often - quite late in coming in. Given HSBC sounds like it is super reliable I’m inclined to reopen my account with them. Is it a more mature implementation than the first direct notifications?

What do you mean more mature? First direct lay out their notifications and transactions in the app nicely, and not all caps.

HSBC has an odd layout they seemingly don’t care about, and all caps :face_vomiting:

Not sure about you, but I receive no notifications for direct debits with RBS hence I’m considering to move over to HSBC

The notifications mostly follow this sort of format (screenshot of a direct debit):

It’s functionally fine, but not the nicest looking.

Global Money Account notifications are a different format though.

Speaking of notifications, HSBC Expat finally added some push notifications recently. Though they don’t seem to work for everything (e.g. received a wire transfer, no notification) and the “If unauthorised, please call us immediately.” on every single notification irks me.

Apparently more app updates are coming in December & 2026 :eyes:

Well we’ve got the current open banking trial letting us see other accounts in the app. I doubt they’ll stop there. I do actually really like the HSBC app. It just feels like a really nice one to use and everything is kinda how I’d want it to be set out. It also just looks nice imo

Heard my account is in a “special status” today, which im assuming means frozen. They gave me a number to call, which asked that I visit a Hong Kong branch.

as luck would have it, I already planned to be there in about two weeks, I’m in Asia currently which is really the only reason I care about getting this account working

But yeah, seems like they do suspend these HK accounts setup from England and sitting unused

I’m on the trial for this and be good if it eventually flows across to First Direct as well

They do the same on the Australian ones. I was told it would go dormant if I didn’t use it for six months. I’ve family over there so it’s used every couple of months or so for birthdays and whatnot, but you do need to ‘use’ it i.e. pop some money in every couple of months.

They do make it clear that accounts will go dormant if not used for X amount of time. Moving £1 around does the job.

To reactive them it’s a bit annoying at times. Some times you need to request and wait a few days for it to be done.

Beta App not working for me today saying it needs an update but there’s no update there. Oh well it was nice while it was working
