How do you fix a gambling habit?

I need some advice, I heard Monzo has a special team but support hasn’t said anything about it

It’s the Vulnerable Customers Team

The NHS has some good advice on treatments and support - https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/healthy-body/gambling-addiction/

Monzo can do a few things to help but it’s definitely worth seeing your GP who may suggest Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, for example.

This isn’t a question for a bank (or indeed a bank’s online community…)

There are a LOT of resources available online and, as previously mentioned, your first port of call should be your GP who can connect you with specialist support.

I was just curious as I got told in the past Monzo has a dedicated team for gamblers and stuff which someone kindly gave a link for the team also due to the fact I’m using Monzo for gambling and additional the gambling block is broken for some sites

It’s a horrible path to get stuck down! For me, the thing that helped the most was signing up to ‘Gamstop’. It’s a government backed site and you enter your bank details and name, address etc etc, then you choose a time frame of exclusion. And it is impossible to reduce this once set. I went a full year without gambling due to it :slightly_smiling_face:

Im going to definitely have to get that sorted out!

Well done! You should be proud a year is fantastic the most I’ve gone is 2 weeks :sob: i mainly do it to fix my depression but I was losing like £40 a day which is a insane amount of money for me it’s basically my whole earnings and bills I was spending The thing that made me make this post was I had a 1.75% bonus in November however they forgot to give it me so it’s been back dated and it wasn’t a major amount but it was around 180 and I spent it all within minutes of receiving it :frowning:

I’ve tried Monzo gamble block feature but I found ways around it

I’m going to sign up for that first thing tomorrow, I’m going to go for the 6th month one hopefully I’ll forget about gambling

Good luck mate! It’s a long path but you seem to be taking the right steps! The Benefit of it is you literally can’t bet online so you would have to drag yourself to the local shop if you wanted to… which is a deterrent! Good luck bro

That was me

It does suck that they don’t have any information on how to get in touch with the team. @natalieledward is the only person from the team I recall seeing on here. Hopefully they see this and can reach out to you

I think you deserve a big hug. Together with the other poster who explained his route.
Looking for help is the best start.
I hope you’ll find a way out.
You’re not alone. So many people suffer from a habit/addiction. If all would stand up, whole industries would collapse.
Brave to post here :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Hi Ashton, reading this took me right back to my CBT sessions. They talked extensively about vicious cycles --things that make us feel good initially, but end up making things worse. Many of us with depression are in some sort of vicious cycle, whether we medicate it with gambling, shopping, drinking, or over-eating the outcome is the same and we end up in a bigger hole that we were in initially.

It’s definitely worth asking your GP about CBT and/or counselling if you can. You may even be able to self-refer into your local mental health team --I know you can here in Wales. It’ll teach you how to identify these cycles and find ways to break out of them.

Hi there @Ashton, so sorry for the delay in me picking this up! I don’t get chance to check the forum as often as I’d like to.

We do have a dedicated team at Monzo who can chat to you about gambling support, and you can also report any issues you’re experiencing with the gambling block. We’d love to hear from you.

Have you tried reaching out to our customer support yet? If you mention that you’re looking for some support around the gambling block your query should be escalated to the right team, but you can also use Share with us to get in touch with the specialist team directly.

Hope that’s helpful, and thanks so much for sharing your experience so far- including being honest about finding ways around the block. The team should be able to talk to you about what you’ve tried so far and point you in the direction of some extra support if you’d like us to

Maybe @AlanDoe can separate it all out before too many people are any the wiser.
