Home Automation/Networking

I feel your pain, when I bought my first Dot months ago my work mates made fun of me. When I bought a second one a month later they continued to make fun of me. Now these gadgets are the norm and no one’s laughing at me now. I’m the coolest kid in town

I have a Nest thermostat, Echo Dots, and all these Hue bulbs - what could I use IFTTT for? I’ve heard about it but not yet explored it. I’d like to hear how my peers use it as opposed to reading up on it.

I have way too many remotes in my living room - I might have to look into this harmony thing - they aren’t cheap though are they!!

Yes we are the coolest kids in town!!

I use ifttt for a few little handy things but you can make your own programmes so to speak and it’s really easy to use!

You’re using IFTTT commands for stuff that the Hue app or HomeKit already does?

Both can do lights on or off at sunrise etc.

I’ve been using ifttt since before they introduced all the different routines

Anyone got recommendations on cameras? I like the look of the nest but it seems really expensive if you want storage. The logitech appears to be a better deal.

I have used Foscam before, they are ok…

I had foscam, really not impressed, the resolution sucked. Would prefer HD of some sort

What about Hive?

Watch out with Foscam and any other cameras designed to be accessed from the internet directly - their firmware is almost always shitty and will get hacked in no time. if you really want to use them don’t open any ports on your router (and make sure you disable UPnP as the camera will try to open the port for you) and have a VPN gateway on your local network so that you can remote in through it to access the camera.

Camera for indoor or outdoor? I’m considering an outdoor floodlight one from ring.

WoW lots of good stuff and ideas! Thank you all for sharing your setups & kits :+1:

My setup (quite basic & simple) is as follows:

  • Philips Hue Kit x 10 Coloured Lamps, 4 White Lamps
  • Philips Strips x 3
  • August Smart Lock
  • Apple TV 4K (Automation Bridge)
  • Sonos Play
  • TP-Link Plugs
  • Smart Motion Sensors

I use combination of Apple Homekit (via iPad Pro/Apple TV 5th Gen) for automation.

There are quite a few Homekit devices on my Xmas list this year :christmas_tree::gift::christmas_tree:

What do you think of the august? I thought it was US only?

Yes, you’re right. Currently, I think it’s only compatible in the US (installed in my San Fran family home) :grinning:
The issue with the current August range - deadbolts! Whilst its very popular in the US upmarket, I personally think Mortice locks (using Key combination) are much more secure! The company is expected to launch a UK version (Mortice locks) very soon. See article here

I have the Ring Stick Up Cam and will be getting a Floodlight Cam soon too. I’ve been really happy with it. It’s also partner friendly too if that’s a factor for you.

She loves trying to scare the crap out of me through the built in 2-way communication!

Haha I do the same thing to my partner, although I make requests like ‘pls put the kettle on’ He isn’t a fan of the 2 way communication. My camera was a cheapy one by Yale and it met all of my needs

@anon47318147 thanks Louis, I’ll need to make some time to look into this further!

I wouldn’t mind a polite ‘put the kettle on’, she decides it’s funny to shout “BANG” at the top of her voice! :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

I’ll take Things I don’t want to connect to the internet/Bluetooth/network for $100 please, Alex…

Anyone still hunting for a Phliiips Hue Home Hub, Amazon have reduced the hub (not the kit, only the hub) from £50 to £25

My Foscam now sits in the drawer as it is pony and bombs out every time I try to connect to it.

Nice reading about all your setups!

Currently have:

  • Tado Smart Thermostat
  • Philips hue (3 colour bulbs and a light strip in the kitchen)
  • Amazon Echo Dot
  • Sonos Play5 (soon to be adding the soundbar, once the Pot gets the required funds)
  • Apple TV Gen 3 (4K variant… coming soon)
  • Xbox one X
  • WD PR4100 Pro (NAS+Plex Server)
  • Amplifi HD with 2 HD mesh points (first router to deliver solid wifi around my flat!)
  • Nest Protect

Using IFTT to sync the tado up with the hue bulbs. Also use IFTT - Nest protect detects carbon monoxide to turn the boiler off using tado!

Edit: Forgot to add the Nest Protect
