I still have my T-Mobile G1 somewhere. I might pull it out for some nostalgia. Android has come a very long way.
My first smartphone was a cheap Android device that was purchased as a gift running Android 2.1 in 2009/10.
It wasnāt going to receive any updates, so I had to root it and custom ROM it to stick apps onto the SD card (it came with such little storage, although that was about normal at that time).
I still have memories of me panicking in the local library because Iād accidentally got my device stuck in a bootloop⦠I fixed it though, and ended up rooting it successfully with Android 2.2 installed.
(It was an LG GT540)ā¦
Happy birthday Android!
Had many an Android phone although Iām currently on an iPhone and itās been the best phone Iāve ever had so far.
Can never moan at a strong competition though, hereās hoping a bright future for it!
Pulled the OG out for a side-by-side with the current king!
OMG @simonb
Iām more impressed that you kept the boxes than anything else!!
Iāve got all my old phones shoved in a box at the bottom of the wardrobe, along with cables/chargers, but the original boxes (and any manuals etc) are long gone in a bid to ādeclutterā. Kinda regret my enthusiasm to be tidy now!
Iāve sold everything I had in between the two, so I donāt have loads of phones and boxes lying around haha.
Off the top of my head, in between the G1 and the Pixel 2 XL I had:
- T-Mobile G2 (USA Import, same body as the Desire Z but stock Android instead of HTC Sense)
- Samsung Galaxy S2
- Nexus 4
- Moto G
- Sony Xperia S
- Nexus 5
- Nexus 6
- Nexus 6P
There may have been a few random ones for a short time in between that Iāve forgotten about. Out of all of them, I probably liked the Nexus 6 the most. It wasnāt a huge seller, but it was very polarising, people either loved it or thought it was just way too big. Which is funny now, because the standard size of a phone screen is now 6" or close for many flagships, but achieved in a different way - taller with a different aspect ratio, whereas the Nexus 6 was quite wide.
The Pixel 2 XL has a 6" screen, and is in every respect a superior phone, but there was just something beautiful about the N6. If they brought out the exact same design with updated spec and stock Android Iād probably buy it.
Also loved the Nexus 6, I had it from launch until recently when the battery started getting iffy.
Iām now on a Moto G6 Plus and already love that equally too - excellent screen, fast fingerprint, excellent battery life with turbo charging over usb-c, headphone jack, 99.9% stock Android and a nice price.
I sell everything to fund the next upgrade but in my time Iāve had
HTC Magic
HTC Hero
HTC Desire
Nexus S
Galaxy Nexus
Nexus 4
Nexus 5
Moto X (2ng Gen)
Nexus 6P
Pixel XL
I would say the 6P was my favourite. The first Nexus with a truly kick ass camera and great build quality. Itās weird looking back now when the Pixel cams are so amazing but The iPhone was just so far ahead for so long.
