General broadband discussion

I have virgin via cable.

How are they bad?

I’m with AAISP but my mother is with Virgin as Openreach’s infrastructure is rubbish where she lives. Her Virgin router is in modem mode with a FireBrick 2700 doing the actual routing, via L2TP to AAISP.

I’d say, try it first. Hub 5s are wifi 6 routers with Broadcom chips, a world away from Hub 3s.

If you do have issues somewhere, then sure, replace it!

VM confirmed I’m getting a hub 3 so can’t imagine that is going to last long, I do get the home mesh system for free being a volt customer once it’s activate so I wonder if that will help.

Badger them for a Hub 5? :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Hub 3s and 4s use intel Puma chips. These are, by many accounts, junk! Definitely not good enough for a 1000mbs connection imo. They also have the AES instruction set disabled (or it isn’t on there! Not sure) which is why a VPN would tank the performance.

I’m going for 200meg (350meg boosted) so it might :crossed_fingers:t3: be ok

No harm in trying it I guess.

If you do have big problems might be worth raising them with the VM support, making a big stink, they might send out a hub 5 to solve them

I will most certainly be on the complaint case

I did see someone say since docsis 3.1 rolled out things seemed to have smoothed.

For the sake of everyone’s time and infrequent connectivity I might just bridge mode and add my own router, but will see how active VM are at resolving.

Can’t afford crap internet when I’ll soon be training for a new job.

Good luck with the virgin internet. We have had it fir years right back to NTL days. I like them as best speed here and prefer the interface fir there tv.

Yes get a Hub 4, or even a new Hub 5. My Hub 3 kept crashing with the number of smart devices I had connected (I conjecture, I’m not an expert) but my Hub 4 has been solid as a rock.

I think being on 350meg I won’t be eligible for the hub 4 :expressionless:

yeah definitely start budgeting!

I’d actually upgrade my router to a better wifi 6 one if high end routers weren’t almost universally extremely ugly. Or, good looking but far more expensive than their actual features warrant. Also if my provider didn’t insist I use their pre-installed one as a modem, I don’t really want two things on the shelf that look different.

One good thing about plusnet was, it was easy to install any router with a modem and use that. I think maybe that’s not a thing with fibre? Shame though, meant I could just have the one decent router/modem thing.

Yeah they are both okay but as community fibre already provides a Velop, I’m not sure it’d be a huge upgrade?

I think I’d want something more like this, stat wise, but without looking like it had descended from the planet Cryon to invade my bookshelf.

So, I’ve never looked up mesh systems before properly and these seem to shine on top:

Which means downstairs, my desk and then his desk/gaming room with Ethernet access too which may be the solution to the inevitable problem

I have the M4s and they’re amazing.

The router is in the living room with the main node. 2nd node is in the bedrooms and third is in my office.

Each have stuff plugged in via ethernet and WiFi has full coverage thoughout the whole house and even the front and rear gardens.

They even come with lots of neat features. Simple ones like being able to schedule when the lights are on, so if you have one in the bedroom like us you can turn off the blinking lights at night.

I’m pondering between google wifi or Deco m5

£10 difference.

The google ones are supposed to be really good.

I wish I could comment on the Mesh capabilities of the Velop, unfortunately I have no need whatsoever for a Mesh system so I just have the one!

I think the Google will be a better fit as I already have google tv which we love, another chromecast for bedroom and also a google nest mini for upstairs music.

£199 I think for 3 google nest wifi which all have speakers in them.
