Flex on Apple Pay: Now it's even easier to pay your way 🎉

Hey folks

Today I’m sharing some exciting news, that the eagle-eyed among you have already spotted and probably been expecting for a few months!

iPhone and iPad users can now choose their monthly payment right at checkout with Flex on Apple Pay, online and in-app :tada:

We’re excited to be one of the first UK banks to offer this new feature.

Here’s how it works

First you’ll need to add your Flex card to Apple Wallet if you haven’t already, then:

  1. Tap the Apple Pay button at checkout.

  2. Select your Flex card and tap it to see your payment options. If Flex isn’t your default card, go to Other Cards & Pay Later Options to select it.

  3. Tap Pay in Full to checkout using your Flex default or tap Pay Later to choose your available, monthly payment options.

  4. If you choose Pay Later, select the monthly payment that works best for you.

  5. Complete your purchase securely with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.

If you choose Pay in Full in Apple Pay, we’ll use your default payment

Your default payment could be to pay in full on your next payment date or choose each time. If you’ve set your default payment to minimum monthly you won’t be able to use this new feature just yet. We’ll let you know when it’s available.

Flex Purchase Representative example: 29% APR representative (variable). ÂŁ1200 credit limit. 29% yearly interest (variable).

Privacy and security built in

Apple Pay uses the security and privacy features built into your Apple devices, including Face ID and Touch ID. They’re designed so only you can make purchases with your Flex card.

All the flexibility you’re used to

You’ll still get all the benefits of your Flex card when you check out with Apple Pay. So you won’t miss out on benefits like no fees when you pay abroad (Mastercard’s exchange rate applies) and your usual interest-free offers.

You’ll also still get Section 75 Protection on eligible purchases. It means you might be able to get your money back if something goes wrong.

You’ll need the latest iOS version to try the new feature

You’ll need iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 or later. You can update your iPhone or iPad to the latest operating system by going to Settings on your device.

If you’re interested in Flex, you can see if you’re eligible with no impact to your credit score

You’ll need a Monzo current account to apply for Flex. Eligibility criteria and Ts&Cs apply. UK residents & 18+ years olds only. Missed payments may negatively impact credit scores. Find out more on the Flex webpage page.

Apple’s terms and conditions for this feature:

Using your monthly payment on Apple Pay is subject to eligibility and approval, not available in all markets, and may not be available for all types of purchases, such as subscriptions and recurring transactions. Must have an eligible card. This feature is only available online and in app, on iPhone or iPad. Software requirements apply. To ensure you have all features of this product, update your device to the latest software version. Not available in-store. Additional terms apply.

What is the difference between this implentation and using your Flex card in Apple Pay?

This is using your Flex card in Apple Pay. But you’ll now see 2 options:

  • Pay in Full: check out using your Flex default, just like a standard card transaction
  • Pay Later: choose your monthly payments in Apple Pay before you checkout

Out of curiosity, was this hard to implement in general or could you just utilise Apple’s built in functionality which led the way?

Used this last night to book a hotel and it was very good. Saves faffing about in the app afterwards to use instalments.

Hi boat! I’m a Staff Engineer in Monzo and have been responsible for delivering the Apple Pay Instalments functionality, so I can shed a little light on this!

As Flex is built with instalments capability from the ground up, we didn’t really have to modify any of how Flex operated to integrate with Apple’s APIs. The interesting bit was that we were integrating with Apple as they were developing it, and our feedback helped shape the APIs themselves - so things changed quite a lot! Integrating between two large companies is always a lot of work though, as we’re both incredibly security and process conscious, so there was a lot of back-and-forth with security and performance testing.

Good for Monzo shareholders, possibly less good for those who struggle with debt.

Lol. Not all credit is bad, and anyone who uses this feature will already have Monzo Flex, so it’s hardly enabling irresponsible lending (any further).

Wow, sounds great to be able to shape a product like this. Thanks for your response!

Prevously if the person has a credit product be it a credit card or flex having to old school pay the minimum per month and accrue interest (if forgotten to use a payment option like RBS used to have or adjusting flex post purchase)

Now though with flex/applepay where they know BEFORE purchasing what they will be facing for payments and thats a bad thing for those that struggle with debt…

I would have thought knowing before purchase what the payments were going to be and if there is any interest it would only help keep things in control.

Ideally apple would allow you to see what your total payments across flex was going to be before purchase but that may be very complex and have regulatory issues.
