Keep the coral!! It stands out, definitely a conversation starter and great marketing tool as it gets people explaining/talking about Mondo when people ask what bank the card belongs to. Its also easy for the eye to catch, making it not so easy to lose especially if you drop it
I really like the coral, but Iād love it even more with a slick hologram effect all over.
Fascinating post @hugo and brilliant thinking behind the colour! Reminds me of Brawn GP Formula One Teamās 2009 winning BGP 001 featuring fluorescent chartreuse yellow.
I think Mercedes offered a choice of five other colours (at no extra cost) on the SLS AMG Electric Drive and I wonder whether it might be good to follow suit? Iāve received numerous compliments about the hot coral and love the colour myself but suspect that it isnāt for everyone.
Perhaps a poll nearer the time could help to uncover demand?
The big problem of giving different options is that, unless you are already a very well known company, the more options you have the more you dilute brand recognition + increases dramatically the complexity of the system (production and operations are harder and more expensive).
I think this topic is one to take example from Apple: I think thatās basically the reason why the first iPod was white. Something new, easy to identify and spot as completely different (and better) than the competitors.
Then (by the time the iPod was huge and fuelled by insanely great marketing budgets) they released iPod mini in multiple colours, with an important caveat: the headphones and clickwheel were still white. The trick is so clever than by looking to someoneās ears you could still tell that you had an iPod user in the room. They obvs knew what they were doing.
If you think about it it is exactly the same cycle that they followed for iPhone (first just 1 colour, then 2, then, by the time every person in the world knew what an iPhone was, they brought more colours). The same applies to the iPad.
So, how does all this connect with Mondo? Even though we are a service company (the card is just a temporary thing in a world that clearly goes plastic-less, Apple and Android Pay, etc.) we have the opportunity to use the hot coral card as our own āiPod whiteāā¦ once weāre a huge success with international brand recognition it will probably make more sense to bring more options to reach that people that donāt like the current colour.
Does it make sense?
Really fascinating reply hugo and I hadnāt considered Appleās approach there.
I completely agree in having something thats a talking point - the card at the top is a nice design but it isnāt fundamentally different/a ātalking pointā compared to other other banks cards. To me the neon pink says āwe are a different kind of bankā much more than the design above.
Many thanks Hugo, excellent points!
I think the only difference with the Apple product examples is that v1 was a neutral ācolourā and Apple might not have followed the same path with a v1 say in pink?
Personally, I feel that Pantone 17-1656 TPX has been a brilliant choice but I wonder if general opinion will be more polarised being a bold colour and maybe gender biased in some peopleās eyes?
Just throwing some thoughts out there, it might be that even if some people dislike the colour it will be better to still stick with the one option to avoid the brand dilution and complexity you mentioned. Either way, I think it will be good to measure opinion.
When I first joined the queue for my beta card back in March I kinda expected the card to resemble the dark colour at the top of this thread, which is also indicated by the graphics within the App. So I think itās fair to say when the card turned up nicely addressed in a heavy-weighted blue envelope I was kinda when I first clapped eyes on the card within. Call me old, but Iām a fortysomething bloke now armed with a bright pink bank card (and yeah - I know itās āhot coralā - but itās still pretty pink to me).
However, after a day or so of wrapping my head around things I have to admit I it. As mentioned above and elsewhere on these forums itās a conversation starter. And most people who see it are wowed by it too (a fair few friends are in the queue for theirs too). Whether we can say itās iconic Iām unsure at this point, but it is certainly distinctive. And building a brand on something distinctive is no mean feat in the finance industry - an industry that many everyday-folk probably consider dull, uninspiring, and fairly inward-looking.
So if want to keep things fresh, my vote would be to stick with bright pink (I know, I know āhot coralā!)
Personally, I think this this blue card looks a lot better. Professional, minimalist and discrete.
Definitely hot coral is way to go
It is distinctive and will be the one that people see and go āoh thatās the mondo cardā ā¦ Banks have been very very boring ---- lets liven it up!!! :mondo:
Coral card stands out. I like it. Looks fresh, young and disruptive. I guess being able to allow users to choose marks a nice differentiation against boring traditional banks/cards.
I quite like the colour of the Alpha card! And as I am colourblind that says a lot! I take it out and I get a whats that!?! reaction! Anyway to incorporate that color into the final card design would be great, even having a few designs to choose from.
We should rename the group topic to āDont go coral cardā!
The Coral is eye catching but a choice of colors is ultimately whatās neededā¦Hate to bring Barclays into this conversation - but the fact you can drop any colour swatch / photo you like and have a personalised card a few days later is (sadly) one of the best features that bank offers. Would love that for Mondo one day
Really? One of the best features? Thatās sad.
Give me competitive interest rates, instant notifications, rapid customer service etc any day
āPlease donāt goā (and maybe bring along some attractive friends?)
Your wish is my command!
Okay so Iām really really shocked at the response Iāve had from this! From many users and of course from @hugo!
Itās clear that everyone LOVES the coral colour and it really would be a shame to see it go! I guess as the popularity of Mondo increases, the coral cards will become more common and weāll get less ācomplimentsā from shopkeepers about the cards! But still, like many others, I do love the colour!
Speaking from personal experience, a coral card is a lot easier to spot lying on the ground if you drop it! Also, I like bright colours, and itās easier to spot my Mondo card amongst all the others in my wallet in the coral colour.
Love it! Super exciting as always Mondo!
I know this is a pretty insignificant point, but the coral card sitting in a wallet is really easy to pick out, whereas I already have a couple of dark blue cards, and two white ones, which sometimes results in a few tries to get the correct one.
