I’ve been helping my son (13) with a small-scale eBay “business” (selling specially tuned Rubik’s cubes). He’s only sold a couple so far and the payments have landed in my Monzo account from where I’ve transferred them to his junior Monzo account. The payments come from ‘eBay Commerce’ and I have a nagging concern that, if he continues to sell things, it might be an issue receiving these payments into my Monzo personal account (which is my main account). I could try opening a Monzo business account in my name, though that does feel like overkill, or change the bank details on eBay to a secondary account such as Nationwide. Or am I worrying about nothing?
I don’t know the answer to your question but I am curious as to what a “tuned Rubik’s Cube” is?
Speedcubers use special ones with adjusted gearing and lube and so on… I understand little of this.
Yes (I’ve had a personal eBay account for 25 years but I set this one up for him - starting to wonder now whether I should have made it a second personal account.)
MONZO CLOSED MY ACCOUNT FOR NO REASON etc etc
Ok, will look into it. We’re talking tens of pounds per month but don’t want to risk my relationship with Monzo.
Surely at this stage it’s just a hobby, however if it’s linked to a business eBay account, as suggested open a business bank account for it to be safe.
Payments from my personal eBay account come through as “EBAY Commerce UK Ltd”, if yours are similar, hopefully that doesn’t raise suspicions…?
Thanks. I suppose I’m wondering if I’ll be accepted for a business account with what is basically a teenager’s side hustle! No harm in trying with Monzo I suppose. Or it could be a way back to
Starling. Plus, cards
You’ve described it as a business, have setup your ebay account as a business, so by that logic i think you should have a Monzo business account
They’re free so there’s no harm, and it would mean less “clutter” in your personal account too
I only take a handful of business payments a year and have a business account just to be on the safe side.
It’s free, should have it open in 5 minutes, and easy to transfer from the business account back to the personal one.
One of those things where if in doubt, there’s no real reason not to just play it safe and do it.
Thanks all. Monzo business now open and another card for the collection
Not to them no, but they do ask for details about what the account will be used for, so I wouldn’t suggest making something up when giving information to a bank just to get the card if that’s what you’re thinking
Or pay someone to do it for you

Yep- it took about an hour to be reviewed and approved, presumably by a human.
