Delay Showing Balance Until Fresh Data is Fetched

One UX issue I’ve noticed in Monzo (and pretty much every other financial app) is how the balance is displayed when opening the app after some time. Currently, the app shows an outdated balance for a split second to a second before updating it to the correct value.

This momentary flash of stale data feels misleading and makes me hesitate; I find myself always waiting for the numbers to “roll” before trusting what I see. As a result, the initial balance shown ends up being pointless, because I never rely on it.

Suggestion: Instead of showing the cached balance right away, consider hiding the balance entirely until the latest data has been fetched. This would eliminate that visual jump and make the balance feel more reliable from the start. Even a subtle loading indicator would be preferable to displaying outdated information.

Just a small tweak, but I think it would go a long way in improving user trust and the overall polish of the app.

Yes! Just created an account to suggest this. It seems like the devs have gone for ‘pretty looking thing’ above accurate information. Showing an out of date balance makes absolutely no sense

Agree. It’s always a kick in the teeth when my balance suddenly drops from £300 to £200

Quick temporary fix:

  • Tap on Monzo app icon to open
  • Close eyes
  • Count to 3
  • Open eyes

The Monzo account balance now shows the correct value.

I like the idea of a loading indicator or greying out the balance on first opening, not such a fan of hiding it completely. As you said, nearly every other financial app seems to have the same issue though… FWIW I’ve not noticed this with Monzo at all but Chase was always very slow to update on opening.

Are people this impatient? :joy::skull:

Not all of us - doesn’t bother me in the slightest :slight_smile:

I know it happens so I just wait that 2.5 seconds :folded_hands:t3:
