Hey folks!

So it looks like you’ve spotted that we’ve started testing dark mode in the android app…

Just wanted to drop by and say that it’s still in the early stages but is something that lots of us would like to see released at some point, and we are (gradually) making progress!

As well as working on “banking features”, we’ve been making changes to our design system so that as we do build new features, they will work well regardless of the theme you’re on. However we’re still pretty early on the process, and as some of you have mentioned it’s sadly not just a case of “switching it on”. For context, our apps have been evolving over the course of 4+ years now – long before dark mode was even a thing – and there are hundreds of screens/icons/bits of text in the app that we need to update and test to make sure that we are confident that things will look good no matter what theme you have selected, and more crucially don’t break your banking experience.

I’ve recently made it a bit more widely available internally in an effort to identify the problem areas of the app and get those fixed and working in dark mode. But basically it’s not a trivial change and hopefully we’ll be making quicker progress soon so thanks for your patience!

I keep getting it intermittently on the Facebook app then they take it away for a day and it comes back again, looks good on the Facebook app although they’ve not updated and of the settings menus

I think most people are pretty comfortable with the idea that making a dark mode is a trivial piece of work, even if you have to change more than one colour.

I’m sure its harder than it might sound to make the app into Dark Mode because they will want to do it properly the first time, so they will be making sure they iron out the creases so when they do release it in labs it doesn’t disappoint.

I have noticed that I can’t force dark mode on my Samsung anymore in the Monzo App too

Yeah, override force dark in the Android developer options stopped affecting the Monzo app several versions ago. I enjoyed using the forced Dark mode for months, although it had a few areas needing refinement as it stood.

Anyway, Dark mode has been in internal testing for several weeks, if not months so far. It’ll be here
