Agreed, it also only “works” if people are using the set categories if people adhere to them.
For example me putting my going out drinks under the personal care category doesn’t provide a true picture for mozo to generate stats or identify trends compared to other peoples spending in that category.
That is presumably what triggers the default categorisation anyway.
If Monzo really are wedded to their categories, then allowing sub-categories of those top-level ones would preserve their data. After all, I’m likely to use the Bills top level for my “Energy” sub-category.
What people want is more power and control about how categorisation works. Intrinsic to this is getting all the information about the type of transaction. Monzo’s automated categories are okay but those of us who want better control would prefer to have all our data not just a glossed over summary
Absolutely, there’s no reason why Monzo need to select a category for me. I’m more than happy for them to do what they want with an MCC code, as long as it’s nothing that I need to see or interact with.
Which allows me to select my own category without any pesky other info getting in the way
Christmas rolls around again and reminds me how annoying this missing feature is… There’s no gift category still, even though charity was added so there’s now a gap in the list which would be perfect for it. I have a single category that contains cat food, gifts and DIY stuff, as none of them fit anywhere else, and I can’t effectively budget for gifts which seems like something that a lot of people would use.
I finally signed up to monzo properly last week. This issue has come up within days of spending. If I can’t do simple things like see how much I spend on booze or gifts then I’m not really budgeting properly?
Surprised to see this has been requested for so long but not implemented.
Otherwise the app seems good, but I can’t see myself switching my salary over until this is implemented.
Honestly from what i can determine will be in the paid account it wont add value to me at all (virtual cards, different coloured card, travel insurance, extra atm limit, travel lounges, metal card, round up accelerator)
Custom categories or lack of should i say is the reason i dont keep my full monthly spending amount in monzo because budgeting just isnt up to the scratch i personally would like it to be.
I don’t think id pay to gain just this feature, ill continue to use my current excel method as much as it takes up more time its just counterintuitive for me to pay for something like monzo plus when i wont get enough value out of it i dont think (unless theres a few more killer things added)
If it was free then happy days, monzo would then become my main account and would probably make more off me
