I do understand what you’re trying to say. I just countered it by taking your argument to its logical conclusion.
A lot of what we buy isn’t needed in the sense you’re saying, but successful companies contribute to the economy in different ways, and the market should find a level at which consumers themselves reject waste.
I understand what you are saying. They are deliberately engineering FOMO by creating new designs which people will want. That is wasteful on the resources; although possibly good for their revenue.
If a company was grossly wasteful, it would mean they’d have increase their prices to cover costs and capitalism would do the rest by forcing them out of business.
Customers will also put a huge amount of pressure on poorly performing companies, and more and more so as everyone becomes more environmentally conscious.
Everyone is trying to be efficient and, to be fair, Revolut is better than most as you don’t even have to order a card from them if you don’t want to - you can use the account entirely with a virtual card if you choose. Most banks don’t allow that and send a card even if you don’t need or want it.
Like @Ivan1954 said, leave it in my suitcase/washbag and be done. If I lose my card today while I’m at home, its not a big drama. At the start of a holiday it would be a pain.
It has made me think about having another bank purely for this though.
I have a Lloyds account too that has incredibly minimal use. But I keep it for a VISA back up and any cash/cheque needs.
I was thinking more of a Starling account that I would never use, put the card in my washbag and forget about it. If I was away and lost my wallet, I’d have a back up card.
I agree most people will have only one current account across the country as a whole.
Having just a Monzo account though? Up until your good self I don’t know anyone who has just as Monzo account. Not even an older legacy account in case.
Monzo: main account, salary and all bills.
HSBC: Legacy account, occasionally useful for something like a cheque.
Amex: For big stuff where I want credit card protection plus cash back.
Barclaycard: For big stuff where Amex isn’t accepted. I haven’t had to use it for a good while now though.
Plus in my desk drawers I have a couple of old credit cards that I used for 0% balance transfers. Accounts still open but not used.
I consider myself “full Monzo” - current, joint and business accounts including as of this month household bills paid from bill pot on joint. But… have two other accounts for paying in cheques (Starling for imaging, Smile (Co-op) for branch), plus Wise (multicurrency spend) and credit/charge cards across the three major networks. Never rely on a single network particularly away from home.
It seems to me that it would look the “right” way up if a left-hander was holding it. It only looks a bit odd (not wrong) if you were holding it in your right hand.
It actually makes slightly more sense in this orientation. You wouldn’t have to turn the card upside down to swipe the magstrip if that was on the lower part of the reverse side.
