My bad I was replying to Daniel for the local french banks.
Sorry I know nothing about spain except Barcelona, Madrid and Santander.
[Edit]:
Banco Santander seems to have a spanish account for non resident: To sign up for this account, you must be over 18 years of age and not a resident in Spain.
For a maintenance fee of 16€ per month. And yes you will get a spanish IBAN.
I already made my choice with SG, as their ‘premier’ packaged account for €1 for the first year [spoiler]plus they’re more flexible with me keeping the account open when I return home[ and have cool card designs/spoiler]
If it’s an actual multi-currency card it should charge in the correct currency automatically right? That’s kinda the point. When I used my HSBC GM account in the US it always debited the USD balance automatically, it was only the Chase debit where I had to select the currency.
Thanks for clarifying. So if I have pounds and euros in the GMA. When using the card it will automatically deduct euros without me having to select the cureency?
It should do yes, they’ll be held as separate balances and it will know which one to debit. That’s how it worked for my HSBC GM anyway every time I used it, I am quite sure Wise works the same. I’ve used my Wise card online for USD transactions and it debits the USD balance.
It’s only if the card is a GBP account that you have to select local currency so the conversion is done by the bank and not the merchant at an inflated rate, but with the multi-currency cards it’s spending in the native currency so there’s no conversion and no need to select anything.
One thing to be aware of is that while it will automatically deduct the right currency if you run out it will then revert to GBP
Simply add GBP or any supported currency to your HSBC Global Money Account. Use your debit card as you would at home. We’ll debit payment from your currency balance if funds are available. If not, or if the transaction is in a currency you can’t hold a balance in, we’ll debit your GBP balance.
If using local currency where you don’t hold a balance, this will debit your GBP balance and not any other currency balance. For example, if you use Mexican pesos this will be debited from your GBP balance and not your USD balance.
Please bear in mind spending limits may apply.
EDIT: You won’t get overseas transaction fees in either instance
This isn’t quite correct. If the ATM uses DCC it will try to debit you in GBP. It is only if you tell it to debit in EUR or whatever that it will take by preference from your EUR account.
As I thought, the vertical Lloyds card looks quite nice. Decided to move over to HSBC because they show outgoing and incoming payments, and will manually transfer £2K in each month for Club Lloyds.
Not quite. On a DCC ATM in Europe, a GMA, Wise, Zing or similar multi currency card issued in the UK, the machine will offer to convert from GBP for you. If you decline the conversion then it will take from your EUR wallet by default, then other currencies in the sequence determined by your card.
It’s simpler to use an EU issued card
I gather that prepaid cards don’t get offered to do DCC for you, but their conversion rates aren’t as good.
