Collected thoughts on card design (Part 1)

Soooo my muji binders arrived the other day and you guys know what that means: it’s time for a collection update. There’s been a few additions but nothing major, I’m kind of running out of accounts to open :face_holding_back_tears:

Is that orange Monzo card just really really worn?

Altho expiry is 28 so it’s new  Just looks a lot more like a sunburst orange than hot coral.

Oh that’s just the lighting, the unholy British sun decided now is a great time to shine brighter than it’s done all year

Hah oh wow, I thought you had some secret special edition one :joy:

Also I’d forgotten about the Lloyds ones that had the “Lloyds bank” text fully upside down when in landscape.

Ugh don’t remind me, it’s almost as bad as Revolut and Curve putting their chips on the other side of the card. Ig it’s helpful for left handed people, but it’s annoying to the 90% of us that’re right handed

Looking at that collection, there are so many MasterCards, it’s no wonder Visa are trying to push back a bit (if that’s what’s happening with NatWest group)

I’m quite tempted to try and catch those NWG Visa cards if I can, but if that means opening new accounts I’m not quite sure if that’s worth the extra hard searches :grimacing:

Yeah, the vast majority of the neobanks/fintechs/app-only accounts are Mastercard. Out of this collection it’s Revolut, Kroo, and the Tesco and Asda ones that buck the trend and are Visa, only others Visas are either big banks or products backed by big banks.

I’ve always wondered why, is it just lower fees or do they have some sort of more accessible product for upstart companies?

Unfortunately ADHD brain has decided I’d rather have all the chips facing the same direction than have all the graphics the right way up

Oh VM is terrible, it’s a vertical card too so there’s literally no arguing that it’s not upside down

Don’t do it, it’s not worth it. You’ll become obsessed, start opening accounts left, right and centre then die inside when your credit report updates

Or Ulster bank. I love their debit card but it took me 3 applications before they accepted my ID

I’ve restrained myself to a degree by only opening accounts I have some sort of genuine interest in having (sometimes needing a current account to be eligible for a credit card). I’d be doing it forever trying to collect every design otherwise.

Also my new Amex cashback card came this morning (old vs new):

I really like it, though I almost missed that it still had my name on the front as it’s in black and blends in a bit with the darker centurion logo.

I like it. They just need to update the Apple Pay graphic now…

I thought just sign up

Seems you need to have been invited and have an access code. These things are usually invite-only.

Edit: oh, no, seems the access code is optional.
