Categories changing automatically

Was looking through some old transactions from last year ad Uber has changed from Transport to Eating Out for the months of May 16 to July 16, has this happened to anyone else?

Has been reported to support via chat but it shows as Transport on Mondo side?

If you take a look at an Uber transaction via the API, you’ll see that the default for that merchant is Transport.

But if you change a merchant’s category (when you order from Uber Eats & the transactions are grouped under Monzo [which does need fixing], for example), Monzo remembers what you’ve changed it to & applies that category to all future transactions, until you change it back. I’m guessing that, that’s what you’ve done here.

Nope, UberEats is not round here and as it has always been transport I’ve never touched it. It was transport previously though, also not used them since October when they blocked my card so had to go back to MetroBank card.

Unfortunately I don’t have any Uber transactions before August last year but if you check yours via the API & the category is “transport” (make sure that you’re looking at the Merchant’s category, not the Attachment’s category), then you’ll know that the category wasn’t changed by Monzo…

I expect you’ll see that the Attachment’s category - which is the one that the user controls - is “eating out”. In which case, if you haven’t changed it, then either the support team or someone with access to your account must have.

If I’m right, it should look something like this -

I don’t know how to work the API but I changed them all back now anyway, just wondered if anyone else had seen this happen.

You can still check those transactions because when you changed the category for them, you’ll have changed the Attachments category not the Merchant’s category (which is the one that Monzo sets). If the Merchant’s category is “transport” then it was you who changed the transaction’s categories.

It’s surprisingly simple to use the API:

  • Go to https://developers.monzo.com/
  • Sign in with your Monzo account
  • Authorise app
  • Enter your email address & click Submit
  • Go to your inbox & click ‘Log in to Monzo’, in the email you’ve just received
  • This should open Monzo for Developers in your web browser, if not, click the Playground link in the top right hand corner of the screen
  • Under Endpoints, select ‘List transactions’ then click Send
  • You’ll see a list of all of your transactions from your account
  • Search them (ctrl + f) for the name of the merchant i.e. Uber

then you’ll see all of the transaction details, including the information in my above screenshot.

Nope both are transport

In that case you had changed the category

(this is why the Attachment’s category is no longer “eating out”)

But if I changed it then why would say 20 only change and the rest remain as Transport?

Because you spotted the incorrect category & changed it back to Transport.

I meant that between May - July they had changed to eating out but from July to October no changes had taken place.

I had to manually change every single one from Eating Out to Transport in the earlier date range

Yeah so I’m guessing you chose Eating Out for an Uber transaction in May, then chose Transport for another one in July. As I mentioned, Monzo remembers which category you last selected for a merchant & applies that category to all subsequent transactions.

Nope I know I didn’t change anything also you said

So surely they would all be eating out?

You have a much better memory than me then

Changing a single transaction’s category doesn’t update all / any of the categories for a merchant’s transactions. But Monzo remembers what category you’ve just assigned to the merchant’s category & applies it to all new transactions that’re made after you make the change.

lol I dunno mate, I know I randomly go back and look at transactions to see if they are all in order and spotted this.

I guess it’s going to be one of life’s little mysteries…
