Isn’t that because Monzo isn’t a LINK member

Yes but we’re lucky enough to have a post office in the village and in the next village. Nearest ATM is a 6 mile drive away so any post office services are greatly appreciated.

Have you tried enabling the magstrip?

I did once, but same result. It’s not an issue though, I rarely need cash. Was just an example of when cash from the post office would be handy.

Cash may no longer be king (in terms of daily usage), however, it does serve a purpose. The cash withdrawals from the post office are handy, and the value in it lies that you can get exactly what you need, and aren’t limited to note/round denominations.

For example, I had went to get lunch from a fish and chip shop that was cash only, I didn’t realise I hadn’t enough cash but there was a post office two doors down (with no ATM, there is one about 5 mins walk away in a garage), so I rolled up and asked for the exact amount I needed and handed that over together with whatever remained from my wallet in the chip shop and also got rid of all the change in the process.

This place is one of the few areas I’d use cash in, and it isn’t my business to dictate what they do or don’t accept. They’ve been there for 20+ years and do very good fish and chips, and are busy on Friday/Saturday evening so despite the lack of card acceptance still get the clients.

Whoever was saying £5k in cash screams of fraud or laundering is very accusatory. Why is fraud or money laundering if you are using it as a means to purchase or in receipt selling a legitimate item, such as a car? I have paid cash for a car of a similar amount, and happily counted the money out in the presence of the seller, and let the seller verify by counting himself and wouldn’t be offended if he felt the need to check any of the notes, after all for both of us it is not small change.

Unfortunately for such sales on marketplaces it is far too easy for the buyer to go crying to the bank that it was some sort of fraud, and for the seller to have his accounts blocked, or the transfers reversed if the buyer’s account is not ‘clean’.

This was me.

Because of the technology we have today, it is usual for people to carry or need as much cash.

Therefore, eyebrows may be raised when people are shuffling that much money about.

I know plenty of trades that deal cash only because it doesn’t have to go through the books in part of full, nor does it then need to be taxed.

So while I agree some might not be doing the bad, it’s a fine way of removing traces from where the cash came from or goes to.

It’s just not common practice this day and age, and can look suspicious.

Not sure why you’d wanna deal in so much cash given the levels counterfeit notes out there, seen many friends stories about in person sales using such to get away with genuine goods.

This goes under investigation before money is just handed back to the sender. It’s not just a report and everything is frozen (banks handle this differently, and frustratingly some don’t just freeze the balance in question).

Hello,

I live in an area where there’s only a couple of ATM’s, both of which seem to have reliability problems.

Following the announcement that we can now pay cash in at a Post Office, I was hopeful that I might be able to withdraw cash over the counter at Post Office, unfortunately not.

Are there any plans to allow Monzo customers to be able withdraw cash at Post Office? I wouldn’t mind to paying a small fee for this.

Thanks

^^

Check if you can get cashback when you buy something. That wouldn’t cost you anything.

There’s also a cashback without purchase scheme being rolled out: https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/2021/12/more-than-2-000-shops-will-offer--cashback-without-purchase--sch/

You can find these on the link ATM locator. One round the corner from me is actually paypoint so I guess works with Monzo. Also free to use.

Only thing is that Monzo is not a member of LINK

Yes, but the machine round the corner from me is paypoint so not necessarily just link cards.

I think t’other half used her Starling card in it and they’re not in link either.

Was quite inconvenienced yesterday as the usual place I go to for paypoint was closed, went along the road to the post office to buy power and my Monzo card was not accepted, asked about doing a cash withdrawal and that also wasn’t an option, eventually had to do a 5 mile round trip.
Why on this earth has this not been resolved,95% of banks allow this service EVEN Starling

Regarding deposits: Did the post office try the card on their machine or did they just refuse to even try? According to the following post office webpage Monzo cash deposit should be available at all post office branches: Monzo | Banking Services | Post Office

Regarding withdrawals: Over the counter withdrawals are not available but doesn’t the post office have an ATM? That should be fine to use, just like any other ATM.

My partners current account card was rejected at the atm I then tried my flex and that was also rejected.

Hmm, don’t think I’ve ever been unable to withdraw money at an ATM. Perhaps others can say why that might have happened.

What about over the counter cash deposit? Did they try or just refuse to try?

Edit: Just realised you weren’t trying to deposit cash and were instead trying to pay for something. With respect to paying for stuff over the counter at a post office - I can’t remember having any issues using my Monzo card (certainly not in the last year or so). Although I’ve probably only ever used it for paying for postage.

That’s because Post office staff break the rules and treat it as a cash withdrawal (they make money) opposed to a debit card transaction (it costs money).

You should report them to the Post Office in form of complaint and places like that whom profiteer should, IMO, lose their franchise.

100% this. Almost all post offices are a small business, it isn’t a traditional chain. They do what they can to make money and not spend money. If they are awkward, the solution is to just use pay with your phone.

Thank you is pay with your phone not the same as paying with your debit card or do you mean Apple Pay
