I love him to bits and he’s probs done more for me mentally than I him.

I’d never go kitten again though, he was a rescue from social media, been a complete handful and a bit costly :joy:

If I ever get another it’ll be from a shelter and a bit older. Have a look there first, you’d be surprised.

They command far too much energy and time (though kittens not much better, they’re self entertaining most of the time).

This is my feeling, too, from friends who have dogs. I’ve always gone for adult cats from a local shelter. Already toilet-trained and just want a peaceful home life. A bit like me, actually

Beg to differ - though science is on your side with this one :joy:

Either coincidence or convenient, but he does tend to come over when I’m feeling a kinda way.

This isn’t generally the case. I’ve read a lot about cat behaviour and current academic thinking is that they have a very similar relationship with their owners as children do with their parents. It has also been demonstrated that, contrary to popular belief, dogs and cats aren’t that different regarding attachment to their owners.

Cats can exhibit sociopathic behaviour but it’s not as simple as saying that you are your dog’s friend but your cat’s servant

This is less to do with the bond between cat and owner and more to do with what cats appreciate in terms of attention. Their fur is actually extremely sensitive and they don’t always enjoy petting in the same way dogs do.

They generally love to be around their owner(s), but not always to be handled by them. Usually the best way to interact is a game, something that simulates hunting behaviours rather than petting as you might a dog. You can also try some clicker training as a way of hanging out with them.

Every cat is different of course just like every dog!

I will say bonding with my cat got me through some very difficult times so I’m totally on board with cats as a mental health support!

Everytime I sit to watch tv he’s there, usually purring while making biscuits or sleeping.

This reminds me of the episode of The Office (US) with Kevin’s dead dog.

It’s what I’ve read in cat behaviour books that have been written by academics, such as John Bradshaw’s Cat Sense. John Bradshaw is a zoologist at Bristol University and his main interest is the welfare and behaviour of domestic cats and dogs (he also wrote Dog Sense).

Sorry to hear about your husky - I loved the photos you posted!

I’ve wanted to get a retriever for a while but I’m worried that the amount of fur in my house will get even worse. Yours looks like it has more fur than the sheep I feed on the fields in Ireland

This is the best thread on here.

I can’t believe he is 10 already…. It seems like only yesterday we rescued him at 6 months old.

Agreed.

Has anyone got any Halloween outfits / accessories for their pets?

We’re taking our dog to another Pop & Bark event this weekend that’s halloween themed so feel like he needs a bit of something :bat: :ghost:

That is very creepy

I have a black Labrador, so I’ve seen bat wings and a similar spider one all in black. I’m going to keep looking and will see what I can find :black_heart:

I’m not a cat person at all, we always had dogs growing up and have been wanting to get once for a while now.

That said… Say hello to Missy, the princess of our house. She was a little stray cat that made our garden her home in June when she was a few months old. We got her the basics so she could survive thinking eventually she would leave, but I guess she decided staying here was a smart move.

She’s still outdoors most of the time and will go hide in the summer house (or her little outdoor cat house - pictured) when the weather is awful. Will come in house every now and then to eat. Haven’t figured out what we will do with her now that the winter is coming …

Reminded me of this
